Description [09/05/11] This is my first tutorial...coloring lineart. Definitely not the only way to color lineart and probably not even the best way. I would also like to point out that this is a rather "quick and dirty" way of shading, one that I do not use anymore. That said, I hope this is helpful in some way to someone. Also...I apologize for the horrible anatomy. I was still learning!

[EDIT 4.0] It was pointed out to me by ~weaver1217 that I completely skipped right over Step 4. Do not be alarmed. There is no Step 4. Step 4 is just a myth. Proceed directly from Step 3 to Step 5, no not pass Go, do not collect $200. I'm glad you guys like this one so much. One day I'll make a tutorial for the way I paint now. FAQs are now included Added a disclaimer. [/EDIT]

READ THIS! Seriously. For the love of all that is holy, READ THIS! This is a VERY old tutorial and it is no longer the way that I paint. If, for whatever reason, you still insist on following it, disregard steps 2 and 3/4 and READ THIS.
The easiest way to make the white areas transparent for your lineart is to put the lines on their own layer and change the Layer Mode to Multiply. Color underneath this layer.
This will save you (and me) lots of headache.

I can't find the Channels. Help?

How do I do this in the GIMP? Sorry, but I do not know. Search for GIMP tutorials on DA and they will explain it far better than I ever could.

Nope, not using the fill tool at all, and I did deselect. xD

Hm. Then do this:

Set the lineart on its own layer, set the layer properties to Multiply. Make your coloring layers underneath the lineart layer, set on Normal for those layers' properties. That should take care of it, as long as you want the lines to stay black.

RebeccaStapp In reply to horses101010 [2010-03-21 01:23:28 +0000 UTC]

The layer that is filled with white, or the "background" layer, ie, the paper that you are drawing on.

Okay, I'm confused. What does the little circle button thingy in step two do? Because I have Photoshop Elements. And it doesn't have a Channels pallate. Help please. TxT I'm hopelessly lost.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RebeccaStapp In reply to Kiwi-sempai [2009-10-19 01:46:35 +0000 UTC]

Open the lineart. Click 'Edit' - click 'Define Brush' and follow steps (it's self explanatory). Make 2 new layers, fill the bottom one with white. Select black as your color. Select the brush you just made and click once on the blank layer where you want the lines to be. Delete the original lineart.

Hope that helps.

Hey, I love the tutorial!
But, I have a problem! I have like the oldest Adobe Photoshop Elements ever and when I do steps 2-5, it doesn't get all the lines(like the light grey) and looks all blocky. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?
Or what I need to do?
I'd love your help!

(Yes, I know I use a lot of Emoticons. )

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

RebeccaStapp In reply to EternalWolfFang [2009-09-16 00:48:33 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm...for PS Elements, I would suggest just bringing up the lineart, clicking Edit-Define Brush. Create a new layer and a white layer and then click the lineart brush (in black) on the blank layer. That should separate it better.

Let me know if you're still having problems.
Sorry for the late reply!

EternalWolfFang In reply to EternalWolfFang [2009-08-23 21:29:37 +0000 UTC]

Well I still have the light grey details on the tail not wanting to fill, but that's not the main problem now. Stupid little white dots. Wait, I KNOW! I'll just get a better adobe photoshop.
ANYWHO, Thanks for posting the tutorial!
I love your art btw<3

It's coming...along. lol The link to my stables is in my signature, you can see the pictures I've colored there. (all of them have been colored using your method) But I am still working on getting the layer method right. I sometimes mix up layers and then can't color on the one I need to color or it goes on top of the colors I dont want it to. It's still quite confusing. But it's better than anything I've tried before, I'm sure I'll get better. Thanks again for such wonderful help.

Am I the only one have a problem with this? or am I just dumb!!! lol I've been trying forever to find a tutorial I can use that shows me how to be able to color over the lineart and the lines still show. But I cant get this to work lol. I have Photoshop cs4, I did all the steps but it isnt working. lol Sorry, I'm retarded I need the special class. I did the channels things and the dotted lines came up and I did the fill white paper and I delete the other lines but now I can paint on the page at all. Anyway, I really am following it to the T, I just don't know what I'm missing. lol I'd really like to learn to paint digital, I just always run into stuff like this, can't figure it out, and give up.

I have ps cs2 and it will work. ok, the highlights on mane and tail would be working with another tutorial (boribabys manetut).
are you sure that your lines on top are in the upper layer and all other below? it works - at least by me...

xBinaryStarx In reply to MoonyArsaraidh [2009-07-09 23:50:42 +0000 UTC]

I ended up just making it into a brush just because I got tired of trying to figure out what was wrong. Yeah I had the lines on top. I'll try again on the next one; might be able to get it with a fresh start.
