哼哈二将The gardian spirit of Ordination Platform Temple (Jietai Si).
When Buddhism goes to a country, it usually absorbs local spirits as gardian spirits. These two spirits are also present in Taoism as the gate keeper of the heavens.
They are called "Heng" and "Ha", it is said by saying those syllabus, they have the power to ward off all evil spirits.

You know, I am really glad you told this story- becuase I believe in them with all my heart. And I think I'll hold on to those syllabus if any time a situaiton like that occurs. Words are powerful protections.

I am not sure if those syllabus work in North America. The power of those gardians may not fetch that far.
But if you ever travel in China, feel free to give it a try.

Some ideas of protective syllables emerged with the ideas of intonation and frequency, and that when certain sounds resonate in harmony with others, you create a connection between yourself and that entity - I'm thinking it's global.
