A blanket draped over your shoulders as you held your head in your hands.

Your most recent experience had left it throbbing in pain.

It was maybe an hour away from daylight. The night was already almost over.

You hadn’t dared go back to sleep, fearing what “Gaster” would have done to you now that he was back to an irrational, violent state.

Amber stood in the kitchen area with a glass of water in her hand as she kept her eyes to the floor.

“Do you want any?” She asked you.

“What?”

“Do you want some water, pal?”

You pondered whether you were thirsty or not.

“Nah, but thanks.”

“Okay,” she responded quietly.

Your head was still glued to your hands. You had no clue why you were so mute.

You had a lot to tell Amber, didn’t you?

Then a certain thought came back to you.

“Hey, Amber…” you began.

“What’s up?” She lifted her own head as she answered you, seemingly grateful that there was an end to the tense silence.

“…You have monster friends, right?”

She snorted.

“______, of course I have monster friends! I talk about them all the time! Also, since when did I fit in with humans?”

You finally raised your head with a funny little grin, despite the headache.

“Since you’ve been friends with me – if I can classify as human…”

You ended your sentence with a mutter for comedic effect.

Amber cackled a little before taking another sip out of her glass.

“But no, seriously,” you continued. “Do you know a lot of different varieties of monster?”

She raised her eyebrows, glanced away towards a wall, and took a deep breath.

“Well, let’s see. I know a bad a** fish lady who’s surprisingly similar to me (she’s f*cking awesome), a nerdy short one (who’s also the girlfriend of the fish lady, ‘cuz apparently they’re lesbians) who is like a giant bearded dragon, two skeletons (who are brothers) –“

“Yes! Skeletons!” You cut her short.

“What are their names?”

Amber’s face went smug. You could sense the teasing even now.

Oh jeeze, here we go…

“You wanna date a skeleton, yo? Ha! I’m not surprised!”

Then you blushed for some reason, getting all flustered and defensive.

“N-no! Gaster just – he mentioned…!”

Her face got a little more serious, even though she was obviously amused by your reaction.

“Okay, okay, I’m sorry (not), but what did he say?”

You calmed yourself, collecting all your thoughts once again.

“He said something about a skeleton named…Sans? Yeah, I think it was Sans.”

“Hmmm” came from Amber.

“Do you know him? I think Gaster must have known him at some point.”

“Yeah, I know the dude.” Amber said.

“He’s a pretty laid back guy. He’s pretty funny, especially when he’s around his brother Papyrus, but kind of mysterious in some ways. You’ll see what I’m talking about sometime.”

“Yeah, about that,” you started.

“Do you think that sometime could happen, like, today? Gaster said that it’s crucial I talk to him and…well, I wanna get to the bottom of things as soon as possible.”

“Well, I could see what they have planned! I could get in touch with Undyne – (that’s the fish lady, by the way), ask if she could call Papyrus, and…maybe we could all hang at his house! That sounds good?”

You smiled at her, albeit nervously.

“Alrighty, we could do that.”

“A-right!” she exclaimed with triumphant fists in the air. “You finally get to meet my other buddies! I bet they’re gonna be so pumped!”

“Yeah…” you trailed off. “I hope they’ll like me.”

“You’ll be fine, ______, they’re really chill!”

Amber did as she planned some hours later, when it was actually socially acceptable to contact someone.

Hearing Undyne over Skype had been like hearing a clone of Amber since they talked so alike, although with a slightly deeper and rougher voice.

That made you automatically excited to meet her.

You could also hear a tiny, little nasally voice in the background – which you presumed was Alphys.

She said something along the lines of “why are you awake?”

Undyne and Amber had agreed on hanging out with Papyrus, so they called him up.

From what you could tell by Amber’s face and Undyne’s tone, Papyrus really was…something.

They had all been informed that you were tagging along, and there seemed to be a lot of enthusiasm coming from over the line.

Now you were in the car with Amber and Undyne on the way to meet the “skele-bros” as they called them, and. Well.

Wow. They were both really boisterous.

Amber drove as Undyne rocked out to the blaring music in the passenger seat. You quietly sat in the back as you observed the monster woman.

She had a long, scarlet ponytail, although most of her head was shaved. Her skin was a shade of indigo, and decorated by scales in some spots.

She was female, but good grief – she was built like a freaking man!

You were staring at the gills on her exposed neck as she turned to check on you. A slit-shaped pupil inside a golden yellow eye met yours.

“What’s going on, punk?”

You could barely hear her over the music. Amber ended up turning it down.

An eye patch and long, sharp teeth caught your attention right away, however.

“Eh, not much, not much.” You replied.

“Huh, how boring.” Undyne said, turning back to face the windshield. You gazed upon what was either fins or her ears.

There seemed to be a fresh piercing in one of them, regardless of what they exactly were.

“Nah man, she’s usually way more interesting,” Amber assured her friend.

“She just hasn’t been sleeping well.”

“Really? Why? Everything okay?”

For someone who barely knew you, Undyne seemed genuinely concerned. You had to admire that.

You hoped that all monsters were like this.

Amber, respecting your privacy, kept her response vague.

“Bad dreams ruin everything, yo. Anyhow, hopefully Sans can help out.”

Undyne burst out in laughter.

“Haha, yeah, because all that lazybones does is sleep! Good reasoning, Amber!”

Then they fist pumped one another.
