Breathtaking! Maybe you could find some time and make a video of how to get this kind results in Inkscape? Of course if the time is there - family is more important. Great gift by the way.

*gawks* How long did this take you? The feather work is amazing! and they look so solid, they look like carvings!

thanks about 30-40 hours, over 3-4 days.I agree the feathers look carved which wasn't the effect I was after.I was wanting them to be soft and delicate but I havnt worked that out yet.

They look photo-realistic that way though. Wow, that's a lot of work! Well worth it too!

Wow! That's a great example of what Inkscape can do.
Given the number of elements in this, did you split it across several layers so that you could turn sections on and off more easily? Otherwise I would imagine that the redraw speed could drive you to distraction (unless you've got a _much_ faster computer than I have).

thanks for the comment.I have a pretty heavy duty computer, which helps.I did it all on one layer, which meant I had to fiddle with opacity now and then to find bits Id lost.I use the lower to bottom and raise a lot.ie putting the shape I wish in place and moving it down then changing the opacity untill it fitted in.
It took me about 30-40 hours to do it.

What is your technique? If I were to guess, you're using the calligraphy tool with a tablet for the fethers. But the layering of colours on the beak is something else.
In any case, it's extremely impressive an a real show-piece for what can be achieved with Inkscape.

Thankyou for your input and lovely comment.I was working with a photo.I drew some basic shapes and then moved the photo to the side, zoomed in and copied the detail shapes as exactly as I could.Yes,I used a Wacom tablet, but I just used the stroke and fill. The trick I discovered with the beak was layering shapes that are faint opacity and zooming in close so the colors and details are exactly the same as the reference.I was learning as I went, trying to blend using the opacity and the gradients.I ended up with about 40 gradients!I spent a lot of time on blending.Drawing transparent shapes and dropping them down a few layers or thinning them until they didn't show.
I love to draw and Inkscape allows me to paint/draw...I draw the shape and it fills it.Perfect in my opinion
