Description Been a busy basta-rastardO lately, which is good because it means more art comming in the future! On the other hand it means we probably wont see this stuff online for a little while, because these things take time before we get the clearance to show them off n stuff...heh...welcome to life, and the beautiful double edged sword that she is....All is not lost though, as I have plenty of other art to upload over the next few weeks as long as I get the spare moments.

Anyway....Here is another phone wallpaper I did not long ago, with scans of the blue pencils and the clean pencils for you guys to check out. This guy was probably my favourite of the 3 cause he's got a little personality. The idea was to do a modern day Charlie Brown looking guy. I have been using a variation of this image as my avatar all along, so now you can see the full pic as well.

You can see the influence of one of my fave artists in his pose.

Tools: Col-Erase blue pencil, H lead pencil, PS for colours.

I'm off to make some replies on the comments you guys have left for me. THANKS for looking!

Peazzzzzzzzzz!

J.

so tell me, you use a blue pencil to sketch. but what is the step from blue pencil to youR H pencil? do you go over it with a new piece of paper or do you erase it somehow?

hey man now in inglish!!, how do you do to erase the blu line, or you use an light table to do a new work, the black line work is so clean, well a little indiscreet, jjejeje, but is interesting to know!

Hey Alex!

There is no lightbox used here. The reason I use the blue pencil, is because when I scan the image in Photoshop all the blue lines completely disappear (when in greyscale mode).

All you see left over are the clean pencil lines which I draw right over the blue pencil sketch. Almost as if I was inking, but using the lead pencil.

Hope that helps, and it makes sense

J

Hola Alex!

Jon.

thats such a cool representation of a stereotypical Charlie Brown type character. You should do a tutorial for colouring and lines sometime, it'd be great to know how you did it

Red-J In reply to Captain-Squib [2005-04-10 01:12:19 +0000 UTC]

thanks Squib,

Not sure when I will have the time to do a tutorial, but it I can I will.

The process for colouring like this is SUPER simple (as far as colours go). I guess the set up might be slightly complicated, but in the end it comes down to your colour choices and also your knowledge of lighting and form. Its all in the way you select your shadows and colours which pulls off the effect of simple cell shading.

Well...theres a little more to it than that, but thats a start!

Cheers!

J.

You know, you'd think having a big bald head charlie brown would have thought to start wearing a hat decades ago.

He is not bald. Like his creator, he was so blond that he looked bald from a distance. It didn't help that as time passed, he did start officially balding later in life.

heh...true true....I don't think he was the brightest dude around....You have sparked an idea in my head that would make a cool piece one of these days paulrik....I think I will attempt to draw the whole peanuts gang in this style if/when I get the time.

Huurrah for big bald noggins!

(as long as I don't get one.....)

sweet, this seems somewhat reminiscent of the style of the late, great Vaughn Bode, I love it

Hey Tenseone!

Now your talking!! Vaughn Bode is exactly who I was refering to as the inspiration behind the style and pose. I love all his deadbone and junkwaffle work. Cheech Wizard is also cool.

Good to find another Bode fan around

good stuff, im still amazed how clean your images look

Red-J In reply to Furi-ku [2005-04-10 00:54:10 +0000 UTC]

Thanks Furi Ku,

I meant to get back to you on that too...There is no secret to it really. As you can see I do all my sketching with the blue pencil, and then draw right over the top with the lead pencil. Once you scan it in photoshop in greyscale mode, the blue simply disappears giving you clean line-art. Of course, you have to be very confident when laying down your lead pencil lines to make the image extra crisp and clean.

Hope that helps...please don't stab me!
