Description
Hey Guys,This is a comission piece I did recently. I've got a bunch of comissions in the pipe-line, which is cool cause it means I can show new stuff around here.
I was asked to draw Spawn vs Batman, which I thought was a very cool subject. I have never drawn Spawn before, so this was fun.
For the art heads out there:
When I'm drawing I very much think of my composition and the overall piece in terms of the finished image. Colour plays a big role in that, and a lot of my choices are made based on how I think the colours are going to seperate different elements, etc...
In this piece I was also thinking very much in terms of the inks, because I know the guy is gonna get the original inked. Although the pencils are tight, this piece is still rather raw and unfinished. The inked piece will have nice solid areas of black, and I think the texture work is gonna stand out too. I guess we'll see once it's done.
I thought some of you guys might like to see something like this in it's early stage. I will post the finished piece once its done.
Thanks for looking!
J.

Wow, great stuff. Spawn looks awesome. That has to be the largest and most ferocious gargoyle I've seen! Great poses too.
Spawn = Awesomeness
Keep up the good work.

yeah...I can agree with that. I'm feeling the Batman vibe today...I just realised I really should post up the inks for this piece some time.

hahaha...I'm sure he has something like that. I think in the spawn/batman crossover he drops some sort of gas pellets which make spawn spew. My recollection is totally vague though.

Is this in anyway computerized? How du tou manage to get all the details in the same pic?
π: 0 β©: 1
Red-J In reply to Creative-Games [2007-01-16 07:16:18 +0000 UTC]
not at all....in fact this is as raw as it gets. I suppose if you saw the original it might seem more real as you can see my sketch lines. Lots of practice!

no...besides the scanning there was no computer used at all.

I really loved this one from the vry first moment I saw it, but never actually got to comment it (...it even made me do a Spawn-pic myself...there we go again! Stop influencing my life like that fer cryin' out loud!!
So as I said, I really love this pic, although there is one thing I REALLY can't agree with: Batman's chin!! It CAN'T be pointy! That's why that new cartoon doesn't work for me; Bts HAS to have a square chin! *lol*
Well, now that THAT subject is out of the way, I have nothing but prais; I love the composition, every element looks cool and all...one of those great pics you look at and keep coming ack to look at it again...and then some more!! Looking forward to see this baby inked and coloured!!

hahaha! Your pointy chin comments made me laugh. I kinda have to agree with you on that point (no pun!)...I have a more recent batman pic which I need to post in which I gave him the square jaw and chin. I dunno...I dont mind it either way to be honest. Square is probably best though!
I'm also looking forward to seeing this thing inked!

Well, yeah, sometimes I tend to be pretty conservative; I don't like it when things I like change too much.. I know, change and evolution is good and important, but, well... *lol*
Yeah!! INK!INK!!!! and then COLOURRRRRRR AWAY!!!!!!!!

Awesome, Jon... i love the way all the details are so nicely separated. Obviously it will make the coloring much easier... As usual, good composition and as a fellow artist, I'm not gonna touch on the structure of your characters as I think you're selling your style... good for ya.
