I have to download that proper comic strip text. Digital Strip, was it? It would flow better with the thin line-art.I just though about the interpretation of romance and relationships between a Disney animated movie verses a 'somewhat' more complex life action musical. I think it's got some differences. (And yet, I notice how often B&tB is compared with PoTO as being near identical...?!)

AH, I know exactly where you're coming from. I think I twitch a little every time I hear someone say the two stroies are exactly the same. One look at the endings, my dear, and you have your proof they are MILES APART. That's not to say they don't have their similarities; but you can draw parallels to any two stories if you look deep enough.

When I saw the comic in its tiny thumbnail form, I read Erik's last panel as saying "You can't hassle the Hoff." And that parallel made me giggle a little too.

It was an essay I managed to find by happenstance on google while old and new story adaptations. It was pretty legit and had supporting evidence, too. Regardless, I didn't agree with it.
Other common conversations that used Beauty and the Beast in comparison to Phantom also cued me off to make a statement. It's shallow minded to think they're similar. Both characters; Beast and Phantom are hideous, yes. And both female characters are forced to live in their 'lair'.That's it.
Belle- being more attuned to the 19th century idea of bravely looking beyond the horrid face, falls in love with Beast. Christine, on the other hand, doesn't; Rejects Erik in fear and marries Raoul... quickly. End of story.
Feel free to object, I'm open for it. :}

No, I agree xD I mean, I've seen people comparing Erik to every single movie character that wears a mask or has a deformity- including the dude from V for Vendetta, Zorro, Joker AND Batman. It's ridiculous already.

You know what they say: Fairy tales were the first horror stories ever conceived and none more so than BATB. I mean, honestly, like 99% of all the classic monsters including the phantom, Frankenstein's monster and Dracula are all male and victimize or prey on beautiful women. The only reason POTO sticks out is because Erik is actually in love with his victim. Hell, it even goes on in most slasher flicks, although it's more of a sexual thing in that case.
There's just something really powerful about the image of a beautiful, pure woman and a rather grotesque ma.... wait a second I gotta go write this stuff down. This is primo essay material.

Ehehe.. fairy tales in history often lack depth and realism, merely because they were used as morals to teach childen.
I've read essays that compare PotO to B&tB as being identical.... WRONG.
B&tB was a story with a moral that goes something like this; "Obey your father's requests and marry the man he chose for you."
PotO, on the other hand, is a horror/Romance. Nothing more, nothing less. (It has be considered a harliquen(sp) romance- and a successful one at that.) The few technicalities of both stories just so happen to be similar. :}

This is great! I love Erik and Christine's clipped dialogue. It's one of those endless "Why?" "Because." "But why?" "Just because!" conversations!
I've thought the same thing about Beauty and the Beast vs. PotO. Certainly there are similarities, but the last time I checked, Erik wasn't extremely furry.
Unless he shaved.
