Description

We turn our attention now to the late 1880s, airborne over the Pacific Ocean. A private passenger plane, bound for New York City, was flying out of Japanese airspace after the passengers on board succeeded in foiling a nefarious plot for world domination.
They are The Sovereign Society of Venturers, a team of justice-minded private citizens with exceptional talents and tools. However, their heroic escapades have yet to end this day…
As the plane approached a roiling storm, Captain Blackhawk, the pilot, attempted to avoid it, but a mysterious force seized control of the plane and they went right into the stormwall. The seven heroes braced for impact as the plane went right for an island in the eye of the storm! As morning approached, the heroes awoke on a beach cluttered with the plane’s wreckage, on an uncharted island. Star-Man and Bulletgirl attempted to fly off the island for help but they crashed headlong into an invisible energy shield surrounding the island, which is flush against the storm that was still raging, which the island is still in the eye of. With no obvious way off the island, the SSV decided to explore more inland. Perhaps they can find a way to disable the shield if they do. As the SSV wandered deeper into the jungles of the island, they were accosted on all sides by vicious dinosaurs and all manner of other prehistoric beasts. The heroes fought off the beasts as best they could until a platoon of Chinese soldiers, armed with guns, helped repel the monstrous beasts. But then, the soldiers turned their guns on the SSV! Just as the soldiers were gaining the upper hand, a Native American man armed with a bow and arrow arrived to aide the heroes as he killed the armed soldiers. The man introduced himself as Turok Stoneson, who had been trapped on “Dinosaur Island” for about five years. Recently, a small army of outsiders arrived on the island and settled in the temple on the coast of the island, at the base of a volcano. Turok agreed to help the SSV investigate the temple and the outsiders in exchange for getting Turok off the island; Turok could have comandeered one of the outsiders’ boats or planes himself, but their defenses were too great for him and the local dinosaurs. The SSV and Turok breached the outsiders’ defenses and entered the temple, but Turok was crucially injured in the fight and he demanded to be left behind. Inside the temple, the SSV discovered more of the soldiers protecting a pair of swords upon an altar. More Chinese soldiers ambushed the SSV from behind and captured the heroes. They were brought before the leader, a man named Mr. Dekker, who explained the swords’ importance. They are the Swords of Phan, twin focuses of arcane energy forged centuries ago and left on this island for humanity’s protection. Dekker and his forces plan on using the swords’ magic to generate a storm that will move towards mainland China and be large enough to rip all of Chinese civilization asunder! As the soldiers were about to execute the heroes when a healed Turok, riding a tyrannosaurus rex and followed by the island’s native people, armed with bows and spears, invaded the temple. The heroes took advantage of the confusion to break free and aide Turok and the natives in defeating Dekker’s soldiers. The Ghost In Grey, leader of the Sovereign Society of Venturers, took both Swords of Phan and stabbed Dekker through the chest before snapping them both over his knee. The dinosaur Turok was riding smashed open a wall that let in a flow of lava from the volcano, scattering the remaining soldiers. The SSV and Turok found an airstrip with a plane that they commandeered to escape the island, which was being slowly consumed by lava pouring from the temple’s entrance. Without the Swords, the barrier and the titanic storm they were creating were instantly neutralized. In the end, the SSV returned to New York and Turok Stoneson was able to return to modern society. When the Society returned a week later, they discovered that, while the island was not destroyed by lava flow, the flora and fauna of the Dinosaur Island had rapidly deteriorated to extinction. The natives were also gone, along with their temple and any trace of their civilization. The heroes postulated that the Swords’ magic locked the island in a chronological bubble of sorts, where the flow of time was completely altered. When the swords were destroyed, the flow of time for the island was normalized after rapidly reaching their era, causing the dinosaurs, megafauna, and the natives to rapidly die out from our perspective. At least the Swords of Phan will never be used for evil again, and Dekker had been taken care of…
Years later, Dekker returned to the world, having survived thanks to his secretly immortal genetics. He also took on a new name: Savage.

Notes:

* The Sovereign Society of Venturers is based on the “Seven Soldiers of Victory”, with elements of ‘the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen’.

* The Ghost In Grey, real name: Simon Trent, is a stage actor by day and a skilled vigilante and detective by night. He’s the leader of the SSV.

* Theodore Knight, the Star-Man, is a genius inventor and American military veteran.

** The Cosmic Rod is a weapon of his invention, capable of allowing the wielder to fly, manipulate gravity, and generate bolts of intense heat and light.

* Susan Harrower, the Bulletgirl, wears a gravity-regulator helmet, invented by Theodore Knight, which allows her to fly at high speeds and generate a personal force field that protects her from many things.

** The name Susan Harrower is an amalgamation of ‘Susan Kent-Barr’ (Bulletgirl from the original comics) and ‘Alix Harrower’ (Bulletgirl’s successor Bulleteer).

* The Crimson Avenger is Lee Walter Travis, who survived a lynching attempt on his life and decided to take on the violently racist organizations of America, turning his survival into rumors among them wherein he’s a vengeful spirit.

* Captain Blackhawk, aka Janos Prohaska of Poland, is the pilot of the SSV’s various planes, bought using Ghost in Grey’s and Star-Man’s combined riches.

* Simply known as The Vigilante, Greg Sanders is a cowboy sharpshooter out to avenge his father’s death.

* The Chinatown Kid, also called by his real first name Xun, is a skilled martial arts student who was living in San Francisco’s Chinatown neighborhood.

** The Vigilante recruited Xun into his cause after they rescued each other from a Chinatown crime boss.

* Turok is a character created by Western Publishing and Dell Comics, also appearing in comics by Dark Horse, Gold Key, Dynamite, and Valiant. He’s more well known for Acclaim Entertainment’s video game series.

** Turok Stoneson was lost at sea when he washed up on Dinosaur Island five years ago.

** Turok’s descendants have survived until the modern day as the Fireseed family.

* Dekker’s (Savage’s) plan to destroy China was meant to draw out his enemy, Ra’s Algol, who was in hiding there.

** The SSV already foiled Ra’s Algol’s last plan for world conquest by defeating her agent, the serial killer called Jack The Ripper.
