Description
The Doom Patrol had been roving about the United States ever since the destruction of their mansion home in NYC, searching for their former leader Dr. Niles Caulder. Niles had betrayed them to Lex Luthor and the villains he intended on replacing the DP with, and now the Doom Patrol wants answers. On top of that, their friend Terry None had potentially been used by her banished father, the villain Mr. Nobody, as a means to return to existence. During that, the Doom Patrol, originally consisting of Mento, Elastigirl, Negative Man, and Robotman, picked up a new member for their team: Crazy Jane, a young woman with a splintered personality and deadly powers attributed to each of her alters. Right now, they are unaware of the current crisis that is befalling superhero kind, with the evil called The Society coordinating supervillain attacks against solo heroes and hero teams alike. When the DP got the call, it was from the Titans, a hero team that Beast Boy, the adopted son of Mento and Elastigirl, is a member of. Driving along the road in their ambulance, driven by their friend Casey Brinke, the Doom Patrol received that call and got that message. They were in the practically-barren deserts of the Western United States, so they were sure that they could see an attack coming from miles away (Negative Man was not as sure about that, though). Suddenly, as they were driving, a burst of blue energy exploded from beneath the road and the desert sands, sending the ambulance flying! When our heroes emerged from beneath the wreckage, the saw a man in black armor expulsing the energy emerge from the crater. Soon he was joined by four others who sought to exterminate the Doom Patrol on behalf of The Society. Their leader, General Immortus, introduced his team as “The Endangered Army”, consisting of N.M.E. (the one responsible for the blue energy explosion), Miss Army Knife, the Brown Recluse, and the Human Flame. Casey Brinke retreated to a safe distance as the Doom Patrol and the Endangered Army went head-to-head. Mento’s telekinetic powers can shield his team from the Human Flame’s fire, but not from N.M.E.’s energy attacks. Elastigirl did battle with Miss Army Knife, a cyborg capable of transforming into any weapon she needs. Meanwhile, Negative Man, in his energy form, flew around the battlefield while carrying his dispossessed body to fight against Human Flame as Robotman and Crazy Jane went to fight Brown Recluse, whom Robotman calls a “legally distinct aracno-individual”. Casey hid from the fighting behind a boulder, but noticed that Immortus was out in the open, just watching his underlings battle our heroes. She tried to sneak up from behind and stove his head in with a large rock, but his caved-in skull regenerated from that attack. After all, there is a reason he is called Immortus… and Ra’s Algol is part of that reason. In the end, Crazy Jane invoked her alter “Black Annis”, a form with razor-sharp claws and an agile fighting style. Black Annis’ claws ripped through Brown Recluse’s costume, and out poured a hive mind of hobo spiders that evacuated and retreated from the battle. Miss Army Knife was distracted by this, and Elastigirl crushed her technologically enhanced body beneath her elastic mass. The Doom Patrol regrouped and defeated N.M.E., and the Human Flame decided to fly away, seeing no more value in staying and risking his life. General Immortus then had Casey hostage, with a gun to her head, but when he tried to pull the trigger, the gun had turned to paper! The heroes and the General looked to see Captain Atom, a solo hero, fly in from above and use his molecular-transmutation powers to save Casey this way. Robotman then punched out Immortus. It didn’t kill him, but it was enough to knock him out. At a nearby motel, Immortus, N.M.E., and what remained of Miss Army Knife were sealed inside makeshift containment fields provided by Cpt. Atom, left just behind the hotel for the agents of the DEO to find. Casey Brinke stayed behind as the Doom Patrol and Cpt. Atom left to regroup with the other heroes to find and defeat The Society.
Notes:
* General Immortus was indeed experimented on with Ra’s Algol’s Lazarus serum, becoming immortal. But, unlike Savage, Immortus reveled in his newfound immortality.
* Brown Recluse is actually a hive mind of spiders that inhabited a human-sized costume and used spider-like powers granted by the suit.
** The base microhero for Brown Recluse is by DA user “Omniferis”.
* N.M.E. stands for “Neutrino-Molecular Energy”.
