In an apartment in New York City, we meet with James Olsen Jr., aka Jimmy Olsen, a college photography and journalism student. In his free time, Jimmy works as a writer and photographer for the independent, NYC-based news website The Daily Planet. Known for his Daily Planet column “Superman’s Pal, Jimmy Olsen”, Jimmy’s articles there focus primarily on the superhero events of the world, which usually talk about New York’s own hero Superman. Secretly, though, Jimmy is good friends with Clark Kent, the civilian identity of Superman, first meeting him through the work relationship between his father James Sr. and Clark’s father, the late John Kent (who was the first Superman before his death). Jimmy also knows many of the secret identities of other superheroes out there, including those of Superman’s teammates in the Justice League. Today, Jimmy is dealing with writer’s block and struggling for motivation to write his article, and his editor-in-chief Catherine “Cat” Grant is beginning to get impatient. However, there was a knock at the door. When he answered, a dog jumped at him and knocked him off his feet. It was Krypto, a dog given Superman-like powers through genetic experiments. Kara Kent, Clark’s cousin and Krypto’s owner (who is also the heroine Power Girl), picked up Krypto from atop Jimmy. Also with Kara is Barbara Gordon-Wayne and her family’s dog Titus, who is usually much more controlled and disciplined. The women explained that they need a dogsitter for a while, and that Jimmy’s apartment building allowed for pets, so they figured he would be their best option. See, Power Girl, Superman, and Batman (the latter of whom is Barbara’s husband Bruce Wayne) are going off-planet for a mission and need someone to look after Krypto and Titus. Barbara is going overseas as a representative of her husband’s corporation and her usual dogsitter is in the hospital, and she doesn’t want to stick her friend and assistant Alfred with dogsitting AND babysitting her young son Damian. Jimmy was reluctant at first but decided to go with it when they agreed to compensate him for his trouble. Soon enough, the women left for their respective obligations and left their dogs and their supplies in Jimmy’s care. After calling his landlord and letting him know he’s got two dogs to look after, Jimmy turned around to see Krypto flying around the living room as fast as possible, kicking up a whirlwind that knocked around all of his work supplies and valuables (this is super-dog equivalent of ‘the zoomies’, as you can tell). Titus, meanwhile, was barking in an attempt to get Krypto to stop the chaos. In the end, Krypto calmed down enough for Jimmy to slip a leash on the dogs and took them both for a walk outside (hopefully Krypto will be calm enough after to allow Jimmy to clean up after the walk). Outside, while Jimmy was getting a snack from a sidewalk vendor with the dogs, Krypto started barking and active nervous and then in pain. Jimmy tended to the white dog as Titus also began acting weird. Then all the other dogs that were with their owners outside began acting weird. Suddenly, a flock of exotic birds from all across the city converged and began attacking people, making off with their wallets and other valuables! Jimmy saw this, as a bird stole his own wallet, and he knew something was up. Trying to think like his friends in the superhero community, Jimmy assumed that whatever was controlling the birds was also agitating the dogs, with Krypto being more affected by it due to his heightened senses. With Krypto lifted into his arms, Jimmy let Titus off his leash and asked him to follow where the birds went. Jimmy, Krypto, and Titus followed the birds further into the city, seeing some of them fly into a penthouse atop a higher-class building. Then, Krypto’s nervousness and pain ended, and Jimmy could only assume the device, or whatever it is, that was controlling the birds was shut down. Jimmy tried to get past the doorman, but to no avail. He was then able to get Krypto to steal the doorman’s sandwich and lead him on a chase, allowing Jimmy and Titus to get through the door. They reached the top floor and snuck into a large and lavishly decorated apartment, occupied by a woman. The woman, who calls herself Magpie, had a device in her hand as she fawned over her many caged birds, the ones who stole all those valuables. Jimmy and Titus confronted Magpie and demanded her to surrender the device and the money she stole. She refused and activated the device again, commanding her birds to attack as Titus was incapacitated by the device, a sonics-based subliminal controller. Jimmy ran from the birds around Pye’s apartment, even blocking an attack from some of them by holding up a fossilized turtle shell she owns and using it as a shield. Soon enough, Krypto flew into the apartment through the window and knocked the device out of Magpie’s hands before then blasted it with his heat vision. With the device disabled, the birds turned on Magpie and attacked her, driving her from her apartment as the police showed up, investigating the noise complaint. In the end, Magpie was arrested for not only the thefts she committed with the birds, but illegal ownership of exotic animals. All the while, Jimmy and the dogs were watching from a distance, having left before the cops showed up so he wouldn’t have to deal with them. Magpie, real name: Margaret Pye, claimed she was attacked by “a flying dog with lasers coming from its eyes”, but the police assumed she was lying (Jimmy also took the disabled device). At the end of the day, Krypto and Titus laid down for the night and Jimmy Olsen had the inspiration to write again for his publisher.
