Meanwhile, a competitive co-worker named Hal Delgato (Aaron Delgato + Halk Kar), who secretly got Miguel hooked on the drug to surpass him, tried to sabotage the laser by replacing the sample of Miguel’s DNA in the machine’s processor with the DNA of a spider. The combination of the spider DNA, the alien DNA in the drugs, and the radiation not only cured him, but gave him superhuman powers. After recovering in the hospital, R.J. She and the others woke from the attack in a cave, where vampires were feeding on their captives! Maxine tried to free the prisoners, from both the caravan attack and from local Native American tribes, but the vampires caught them. One was about to convert Maxine into a vampire when the blood-suckers were attacked by the Rough Night, a team of vampire hunters led by the half-vampire Hex Blade. The vampires were killed, but Maxine was infected, though not enough to immediately change her into one of them. The native shamans freed from the vampires quickly performed a magic ritual to cure the vampirism, but the conflux of vampiric power and magic caused her to disappear! Maxine was whisked throughout time and space, bouncing off the interdimensional Speed Force, until it finally calmed down. Due to this incident, Maxine was reverted back into the body and mind of an infant, and she reappeared in England in the 1910s. The knight Sir Brian Faltsworth and his brother Justin found the abandoned baby, marked only by the ‘Maxine’ necklace around her body, and took her home. Brian raised Maxine as his daughter, and as a teenager, she discovered that she could now move at superhuman speeds. When World War II happened, Sir Brian took on his family’s legacy as the heroic Union Knight (Union Jack + Silent Knight), while Maxine crafted her own costume and started calling herself “Max Spitfire”. Both served in the heroic All-Star Invaders (Invaders + All-Star Squadron), while Brian’s brother Justin instead joined the Nazis as the half-vampiric Blood Panzer (Baron Blood + Red Panzer). When Max Spitfire confronted Blood Panzer, it was revealed to her that not only was he her uncle, that she also has vampiric blood in her veins. Rage triggered Maxine’s vampiric powers, and she exiled herself in order to figure this out for herself, half-convinced that Blood Panzer did something to her. The Linear Exiles offered to help her with this in exchange for her service...

The brothers soon discovered a strange piece of plastic, which they never realized was alien in origin. Criminals later robbed their store, killing Joseph in the process. Walter decided to dedicate his life to fighting crime, and he used the alien plastic to craft special lenses that allowed him to read minds. Anaglyph, as Walter came to be known, joined the Agents of WATCH (Agents of Atlas + Watchmen) to rescue the president from the evil sorcerer Moklaw (Yellow Claw + Moloch the Mystic). Anaglyph remained active as a vigilante, even after the Agents’ disbandment and the outlawing of costumed heroes. He and his friend Nite-Droid (M-11 + Nite-Owl II) eventually discovered their former teammate Sun Tsu’s (James Woo + Ozymandias) plan to attack several cities across the planet. While Nite-Droid, Spectre of the Jungle (Jann of the Jungle + Silk Spectre II), and Dr. Marvel (Marvel Boy/Uranian + Dr. Manhattan) decided to remain quiet about this, knowing that exposing the conspiracy would reignite the tensions between two nuclear-armed superpowers, Anaglyph remained steadfast to his convictions; Dr. Marvel was forced to kill Walter, which he accepted.
