turns out there's a Princess Daisy collab going on, and I didn't want to waste the opportunity. I wanted to give her something to wear other than her typical dress, so I dolled her up in her ahtletic clothing from the recent games. Sorry I went overboard on the squigglies

Well, she's like that for a couple of reasons:
1) She was slightly tan in the Mario Tennis 64 game, and I always liked that version of her.
2) Since she comes from a kingdom that's hot and is just a big desert, I thought it would be obvious why she had a bit of a tan.
3) I like tan skin.

2 is the biggest misconception in Mario lore actually. Sarasaland itself isn't a desert. The entirety based on places shrouded in myth and or has a connection with aliens.
World 1 is Egypt. World 2 is the Mu Kingdom, World 3 is Easter Island and World 4 is China.
"Sarasa" isn't even a parallel to "Sahara" it's actually based on a Japanese word referring to many parts in context to quilting. It's more of referring to how the kingdom is a patchwork of different types of land.
Furthermore, the World 1 = Where the Princess' Castle is theory doesn't hold up as we don't see Daisy's castle and that logic didn't even take until the New Super Mario Bros. game. I mean Peach's castle wasn't in Grass Land for Super Mario Bros. 3, why the same for Birabuto?
