Attempt on Jungle Emperor Leo fanart.It was really hard to ignore my anatomical style and do a cartoony artβ¦. XD I am planning to do a full fan artwork piece soon.

Well Jungle Emperor Leo, was originally a manga series. Called "Jungle Taitei", written by Osamu Tezuka. Then it was translated to a cartoon version, but sadly enough the television company Osamu was working with at the time wanted the cartoon to be acceptable for children, so much of the material from the original manga had to be written out. That is the 60's version of the cartoon, which is actually a poorly presented version of the original story line. Most people cling to that version, and some call it "the best" which I strongly disagree with. Then we have "Onward Leo!" Which is another animated series about Leo as an adult and his wife Lyre. They have two cubs, a boy and a girl named Lune and Lukio. The most original version is the 1989 series with the episodes and animation being hand done by Tezuka, until he passed away. He ended up dying half way through the series, so after a while we see a great decline in the story telling, but all in all it's probably the best by far. Last but not least, the JEL movie, which is what this picture is from. Once again, a perfect vision of what Tezuka wanted to portray and teach.
Believe it or not another TV special of JEL was released in 2009, it's a modern remake and has little to do with the original story, but I really enjoyed it.

Yea I know what you mean a lot of that was due to a shitty film budget. That's why he remade the series later on. The 1989 series is my favorite but of course.. it's only available in Japanese. You ought to check it out some time.

i know :3 i watched Few Actualy,When leo was a kid and When lune Was a teenager And talalala! all of them were so Sad! i Cried and i KNEW it was Chinese but at least there were Lyrics ^^

Actually he is named Leo and not Kimba (english dub name) :U

I know, but the anime was actually a japanese Show, and his original name is kimba

no his original name is Leo in Japan. (in all original japan versions with english subtitles they write Leo.) Only in US he is renamed Kimba to make it sound better.
