Description
Here's the collection of all the finished ponies my wife and I have done so far: you can see a custom Soarin', Braeburn, Ditzy Doo (aka Derpy), Lyra, BonBon, Fluttershy with show accurate hair, Carrot top, Vinyl Scratch (aka DJ Pon3), Trixie, Dr. Hooves, and Octavia. Also present are the rest of the mane cast plus Tiana's favorite original blind bag pony, Sweetsong. They were all originally blind bag ponies. I love them all, but many have been sold on eBay to finance this pony habit and many more are going up. Sigh, if you love somepony send it out into the world.Ponies (C) hasbro

That BonBon is my favorite! But wow all of these are great! I've been thinking about modifying my Fluttershy to have her hair right, because her RD hair perturbs me. The eyes though...they are done so well with so much life and accuracy. Just amazing!

Thank you. We've got a mane-accurate BonBon in the works. Keep an eye out at the end of the summer. Let me know how your fluttershy turns out, fixing her mane is what got us started customizing in the first place.

so...you made these? they are incredible! how much would that kind of thing cost? i would make them myself, but i don't think i have that kind of sculpture talent. i love that they are show accurate.

Well, no, we didn't make these. Hasbro sells two inch tall plastic ponies. In Europe they're called blind bags because you don't know who you're getting when you purchase one. Over here they are sold in boxes of twelve at Toys R Us. However, six mane ponies, five different styles of ponies (all the ponies are repaints of one of those five sculpts). We wanted a show-accurate fluttershy so we cut the mane off, did some sculpting and had toy that looked like the original, so then we did that for a whole bunch of other characters, making them look like they do in the show. We don't make 'em, we just customize.

so you use modeling clay of somekind? how exactly does that all work?

I use light weight stone clay. It's air-drying, as long as you keep it wet you can keep working with it. My wife does the painting with acrylics (she's started experimenting with watering them down a bit) I varnish them and there they are.

Very nice I particularly like the octavia, fluttershy, and soarin. How did you rescuplt their hair? (I have some sculpey and games workshop greenstuff, do either of those work or do you have to spray paint over them which might ruin the eyes?)

Soarin' is probably my favorite, though Nightmare Knight has a special place in my heart. I use air-drying light weight stone clay. I have heard that cooking sculpy and the pony can cause the pony to get a bit melty. I don't know about games workshop greenstuff. We don't use any sort of spray but acrylics with a coat of varnish to preserve the paint. Hope this helps. Let me see what you come up with.

Ah I see, I've been wondering about air drying clay and if it's durable enough. What brand of clay do you use? I'm interested in the FIMO brand which is sold locally [link]

Sorry it's taken so long to get back in touch. I have used LaDoll Premiere clay. After I sculpt I always cover it with varnish after painting and all the sculpts have held up nicely. The FIMO looks good but I haven't used it. Let me know how it works out.

The background is actually the back of the box that the ponies came in. I can't find actual blind bags but Toys 'R Us has a nice set of twelve ponies and I figured the box made a better backdrop than my stereo. And thanks for the compliment, you didn't need to.
