Description
EDIT: I needed to work out some things that bothered me. So,...The colors are more luscious now, and the contrast between light and dark is stronger. The helmet should look more metallic now and I improved the shadow & light on nose, lips and right arm (the one in the back).
I also fixed the proportions of his forehead.
And I changed the color of the helmet-strap (thx to ~Dracina for pointing that out).
I also added skin (by ~zellfaze ) and cloth (by ~emperorwarion ) textures - you may need to download for full size to actually see it, though

That was that last that Jane hear of Dell, or Engie. The kind, soft spoken Texan who never hurt anyone (by his own hands at least). And Soldier had killed him after a rampage, his hands coated in his former partner's blood. And it all his fault he won't see that yellow hardhat, or hear him sing while playing to his guitar at 3 in the morning. Or eat one of his apple pies that melt in your mouth. Or make fireworks that light up the sky on the Fourth of July. And now his life blood is caked on his hands.
All because he couldn't control himself.

I'm not the best at critiquing but I'll so my best. You generally did a good job with the shading of the blood and the soft tone given the harsh theme gives the piece an interesting feel. The shadowy silhouette version of him in the back is a nice touch and it almost looks like Soldier is having a war flashback as he looks at his hands. The shading of the cloth and helmet are spot on in my opinion but I think the straps on the helmet are supposed to be brown. Looking at your step by step process, it's a shame you lost the detail and emotion of the eyes. Eyes are windows to the soul and all that jazz. So really with soldier, you have to make his mouth show most of his emotion, which can be a pain in the butt. I think you did pretty dang good.

Yeah, I opted for using the helmet cause I was concerned one might not think of Soldier immediately; that's why I put the shadey non-helmet one in the background.

Yup, I would have to figure he would only really take off his helmet for shower and bed. And he'd always have some sort of weapon on him, considering how paranoid he is in that comic too.

And/or gun beneath the pillow. His helmet wouldn't be far away when he's in bed. If he even sleeps in a bed. The way the comic looked, it wouldn't surprise me, if he'd sleep sitting with the back to that knocked over table

Well, I think he sleeps in his 'barracks' when he's with the rest of the group. I kind of see them living both at the area they're 'deployed' at and at what they call home. And yeah, his helmet would never be far away. He might just sleep with it on, if he's feeling particularly paranoid that night.

With as much as he wears that thing, it probably would feel weird NOT to be wearing it... though I couldn't imagine sleeping with it would be very comfortable either.

Indeed. You might also think of it as a sort of security blanket. He would probably be really jittery and uneasy without it.
