The problem with men

     It was a warm summer day as Maria sat on the lawn of the public library in her home town. She noticed all the couples walking by, hand in hand with one another. The young women smiling, and giggling at the jokes their boyfriends, with their hand resting protectively on their hips, told. It was all so lovely, so beautiful...
     So pathetically sad. Maria couldn’t help but pity those poor giggling girls. They didn’t know that those boys were either going to do them and ditch them, or leave them for another girl with more curves.
     ‘Men are all the same’ Maria thought to herself. ‘They don’t give a damn about us as girls, they just wanna screw us all.’ She wondered how many of them had lost their virginities to the boys they were walking with, or to some other boy. She looked at one couple who was staring at her. The girl was whispering to her boyfriend.
     “See Bobby? I told you she was weird! She’s always wearing that stupid headband and that pair of jeans.” Maria kept calm. Of course, Connie Marino would just have to walk past her, comment on her favorite Naruto headband, and make her bad mood even worse.
     “Do you mind Connie?” She said loud enough for the couple to hear. “Some of us are trying to think without cruel gossip running around.” Connie sneered.
     “Well, maybe if you didn’t wear dorky stuff and act like a freak, people wouldn’t gossip so much.” She snapped. Maria kept quiet for a moment, then said
     “At least I have friends who like me for me, not for how much money I have, or how many guys I’ve slept with. What’s your record Connie? 17 guys?” Connie steamed.
     “Actually, it’s 20! And maybe you could get a boyfriend or two if you weren’t so prissy.” She hissed viciously. Maria smiled, and pointed behind Connie to her angry faced boyfriend.
     “20? You told me you were as pure as new fallen snow! You lied to me! How do I know you don’t have crabs or something? We are so over!!” And with that, he stomped off, Connie racing after him, trying to smooth it over with promises of “special” favors. Maria laughed. It felt good to see girls like Connie get what they deserved. She leaned back on the grass and watched as the clouds went by.
     “I envy you clouds. You don’t have to worry about love or anything. You just float around in the sky.” She muttered. ‘They don’t have to worry about being cheated on either.’ She thought, thinking back to the reason she was sitting here in the first place. She was waiting. Waiting for her sort-of boyfriend, Jake, to show up so they could talk. They were going to talk about something that had put their relationship on thin ice lately. Two weeks ago, Maria had been told by her friend Nathan that Jake had slept with her best friend Gloria the previous night. At first, Maria had denied it, saying Jake wouldn’t do that to her. He loved her, didn’t he? But then, after asking Gloria and hearing the teary confession straight from the source, she began to wonder. Then she realized Gloria would not lie to her. The two were as close as sisters. Finally, she had called Jake, asking him to meet her in front of the library today. She was going to confront him. She had practiced what she was going to say in front of the mirror for over an hour as she got ready.
     “Maria!” called a familiar voice. Jake was walking down the street, hands in his pockets, emanating a certain devil-may-care attitude. Maria stood up. Her hands curling into fists. She could feel her rage growing. Taking a deep breath, Maria forced her hands to uncurl.
     “I like your outfit today Maria, it suits you so well.” He said, looking at her headband, Black Mandarin style dress, Black pants and dressy sandals. Maria forced herself to smile back at him.
     “Yeah, real nice. Very sexy.” He said, oozing confidence. “So what’s on your mind? You sounded upset on the phone.”
     “I was upset.” Maria replied. “Jake, answer me honestly. Did you or did you not sleep with Gloria?” Jake was quiet for a moment, then said
     “Oh, Maria, is that what This is all about? You have nothing to worry about! You’re the only one for me.” Maria glared at him.
     “Have you told Aleena about us yet?” She asked. Jake sighed.
     “I’m working on that. You know how long I’ve been with her Maria, I can’t just go off her cold turkey, I need to ease myself off of her love.”
     “You mean ease off the sex with her don’t you? I told you when we started this I didn’t want to be the other woman here!” Maria snapped.
     “Oh, here we go.” snarled Jake “Another one of Maria’s monogamy lectures! In case you don’t know Maria, I’m a guy. I have needs, and if you would just put out for me...”
     “Stop right there Jake!” Maria barked. “Don’t you dare turn this on me! I don’t care if you do have needs, I’m not gonna lie on my back and spread my legs for you like other girls would! You say you love me, but if you did, you wouldn’t be pressuring me for sex all the time!” maria could feel hot tears in her eyes. No! This wasn’t supposed to happen dammit! She wasn’t supposed to cry! She turned away, refusing to let Jake see the tears that had gathered, threatening to fall. Jake sighed and put his arms around her in a kind hug. Maria stiffened at his touch. She knew what he was trying to do. He was trying to get her to forgive him.
     “Maria, you know I love you” He said. “Please, we can work this out. Don’t cry.” Maria ripped herself from his embrace.
     “It doesn’t work that way Jake!” She yelled, tears streaming down her face. “You can’t say you love me while you’re still dating someone else, Screw my best friend, and then say you still love me! That’s it! I’ve had it! You can go on seeing Aleena for all I care. It’s pretty obvious you don’t!” And with that, she turned, walked past him, and said
     “Goodbye Jake.” Then she ran, grabbing her bike and racing down the sidewalk, blinded by tears, not caring about pedestrians or cars as she tore through the intersections. She was halfway home when she looked up.
     Straight into the headlights of an oncoming semi-trailer.

     Jake did more than break Maria’s heart that day. He killed her...
