I have often thought that the ruling class are engaged in a great experiment to test how exactly they can recreate the conditions that prompted the American, French, and Russian Revolutions before the ruled classes overcome their fear of the sort of renewed repression that followed in the latter two cases, and whether they have in fact made that fear so powerful as to stifle the concept of rebellion.
I have then usually thought "Nah. If they were doing it consciously, they'd be a little God damn subtle about it."

Why would they want to "recreate" the same conditions? I thought it would be in their best interests to avoid repeating the mistakes of the past to prevent communist uprisings.
If anything, I think the fear of a revolution being eliminated, and a lack of real motivation to rebel are the main issues here. The conditions in modern First World countries aren't bad enough that people would risk their lives to overthrow the government.
