Description Before you duck and cover, maybe bypass the media hysteria and learn from the country that's been dealing with this for decades. Their attitude tends to be a lot...healthier.

Frightening, btw over in america have you ever come across a book called "When the wind blows" by Raymond Briggs a damn good story about "what if" on a human scale, the author got the idea after reading alot of Local Govt. advice books.Β  We had to watch the animated movie version of it in school with the David Bowie music.

Except thatΒ had the old man and woman die in it which isn't very comforting.

I think that was the point ~ no one would "win" in a nuclear attack, the author had made a study of the official advice forms from Local govt.Β  many of which contradicted each other.

I still have my granddad's 1960 Handbook that the Irish govt. printed and it's equally useless.Β  Like the farm advice of scraping off the first few inches of straw from the Hay Bales before using them or just burning them, or the bit about shoving a wardrobe up against the window and filling it with soil(and of course the nuclear warhead will waitΒ Β ) or the advice to hide under the stairs.

Bit daft like those 1950's advice films that told schoolkids "duck & cover" or hide under the school desk in case a bomb drops

trust me there's worse, back in school our German teacher had us read German novels etc one of them that frightened the crap out of me was Die Letzten Kinder Von Schewenborn by Gudrun Pausewang, many of the places mentioned in the book are actual small towns in Germany ~ the German education system eventually put the book on compulsory reading lists for Primary School kids.

No it was a "What if?" type of novel, there's an English edition of it available i'd be surprised if you can't order it down your local library.Β  One of the big Cold War watchpoints was in Germany i.e. the Fulda Gap where the Soviets would have to pass through to conquer Western Europe.Β Β

At one point of the book it's described how the kids Grandparents are on a visit to the city of Fulda just when the Soviet hit the place with a nuclear weapon.Β  The story is told from the point of view of an ordinary family and their kids who just happen to be visiting relatives out in the country when WWIII kicks off between NATO and the Soviet led Warsaw Pact.

"Die Letzten" is German for "the last" if you haven't guessed it's not a happy ending

If your local library is halfway decent it probably has a copy available, it was quite popular in schools during the 80's, or if your tastes run to more modern stuff you could try reading "Resurrection Day" by Brendan DuBois the american author.

That book is a "What if?" style novel set in a U.S 1970's after the Yanks and the Russians kicked off a nuclear exchange due to a mistake during the Cuban Missile Crisis with a decent detective mystery as part of the storyline - it's also good world making, the author explores what the world would be like if the Soviet Union and the U.S got taken off the international chess board.
