The Rapturians(as I call them) lived underwater since 1940. NASA was started in 1958, the year the civil unrest started(the war for Rapture started a year later). They couldn't have known about it, living underwater all that time.

It's kinda cool how in the first game little sisters kinda look like little kid monsters, but from the Big Daddy's point of view in Bioshock 2 they look like normal little girls

I think it had more to do with graphics. In Bioshock 2 they probably just changed the Little Sister's appearance.

actually, it was said in an interview that they tried to give the little sisters a more innocent and adorable look because of the pov of the Big Daddy
