Description I thought this was a good way to kick off revitalizing my gallery. Open wings, but not yet flight.

I am fascinated with the image of heavy wings. Weighty, meat and bone mechanical appendages, meant somehow for flight. It makes taking wing seem like a grand effort, a battle to break away from gravity.

I laughed about it later when I realized it, but I kept going back to AWOLNATION's Sail, and Florence and the Machine's Heavy in your Arms while drawing this.

For those interested in who this is, it is Tekhetsio, my awful death dragon character, meant to fit into the very early days of his backstory.

I can't tell you just how much I love this artwork. The wings are one of the best ones I've seen in a while. So heavy, anatomically real, dark and animalistic. Really gets you interesting in the character and his life story. Great art, thank you for an inspiration.Β

I have to agree - I always liked the image of heavy wings too, just the muscles required to operate them, it boggles my mind. Picture works it perfectly. Love it.

C: I love this!! Always thought ages on winged characters like that ... couldn't sleep many nights trying to find a way to get past the 'impossible anatomy' thing. Do you think it'd be possible if they were really light?? Like, really really impossibly light??

Bird-bones are the way to go! Still doubt it would work, with the lack of keel etc etc... still fun to pretend, though!

Ya know...this picture suddenly makes me ponder...Humanoid winged-types must have some damn ripped back muscles. Yum.

So good to see you baaaaack and posting!

lmfao yes, and a whole separate set of shoulders. Had to cover them up in shadow in this one, but have been wanting to draw that for a while. It's still technically impossible, but I like to at least *try* to get something sort of realistic.

And yes! Took me long enough, right? lol

The realistic approach to this boggles my mind. I mean, you could probably leave the ribcage alone, but all the "normal" shoulder anatomy would probably have to get crazy to accommodate the second set...I am just going to continue thinking about sexy backs and stop there.
