Description
Warning, pretty big fileDid this up for a buddy of mine who told me he's struggling with drawing heads at odd angles. Since I've been doing a lot of practice in that area, I thought I'd give doing a tutorial a shot!
Part 2 to follow, perhaps. I'm thinking I'll show a 3/4 rear shot for that one. A less commonly used angle, but an important one to master.
I don't claim to be an expert here, I'm just trying to show ya'll how I do things (I'm sort of re-learning as I go, in fact!
Critique of my method is encouraged if you see I'm doing something wrong and can help me out, or if you see I how could improve something, please let me know! I really appreciate any tips I can get
Same goes for all my deviations, really

Thanks man, I think this will help a lot
I actually start out more or less the same, circles and eclipse lines around to get the basic head down, but for some reason it always comes out looking disfigured xD
(And Im sorry that this tutorial brought abotu a text change, how could I be so foolish as to not foresee it? DX)
And this is indeed a good sketch for a tablet, very good actually, I was worried when you sggested OC how my char would turn out whrn not conceved first through paper and pencil
But thanks alot again man, I could definately use a step-by-step reference, probably I couldnt follow end result refs quite properly and hopefully that will change now

The text change was due to a computer crash Ah well.
I sure hope it helps you!

I usually always start with a circle and some guidelines, but then I draw the nose first then work out the profile of the muzzle and where the rest of the features go and it works pretty well for me.
Still this is incredibly helpful! Thanks Red!

Very awesome job! X3 If anything I do heads just about the same way you do. o.0 lol If anything I start with the eyes though and then move on to the muzzle. But I do the same thing, the line for the muzzle, a flat shape and then keep defining it more. XD And I think its ok to go out of the circle and often times I find it necessary. When ever I tried to keep stuff IN the circle it kind really screwed up. remember their GUIDELINES!! Its ok to go outside a little, just as long as you keep it in the direction you want it to be. *nods* Atleast thats my two cents. X3

Yeah, this is true I think I need to come up with better guidelines though. If you're trying to draw a whole figure, and go outside the guidelines on the head, it looks really freaky sometimes... The head gets really out of proportion

*nods* but thank God for the magic that is the eraser!! 8D lol. Truth be told because of my art class I really don't erase anything unless its keeping me from finishing the drawing. o.O

Dude... I don't even use guidelines. XD
I think... well... I used them on my most recent piece. But yeah. Before that I hadn't used guidelines for 4 years.

Well.... I don't know. Guidelines sure as heck help me!
Maybe I'm not comfortable as you with my artwork, I don't know... But guidelines help you decide how big a character is in a drawing, exactly what their pose is...
Very helpful for animation and comics, in my opinion... But if you can go without, more power to yuh!

Tenki-101 In reply to RedRodent [2008-04-17 21:02:43 +0000 UTC]
LOL
It's not really a good thing. My art became really stoic... and flat.
But... it's worse with guidelines for me... I like.. hate it. I can't use guidelines!
Anyways. Like I said. I used that guideline on that last Deviation I did and it turned out wonderful... to me. XD So maybe I am learning how to use them!
But yeah. 99.999% of the time I don't use guidelines. It's just not my thing, ya' know?

Guideline are for the weak! Or so I thought before I realized how useful they could be. Not bad at all, 'ere. Up tilted is a tough pose so this is quite useful. Nice job. Look forward to a part two...(I must get one of those off-brands someday...)

Thank yeh! Why do you want an off brand tablet? It's crummy
I have to go super-slow or super-fast for it to detect the motions I made... It gets shaky otherwise
Might be the batteries going out though...

I'm a massive cheapskate who has been agonizing over the last few years on getting new colored pencils. It shall take a long while before I'm lured by a Wacom... I keep waiting for one to fall into my lap with little success...I should just cave and use the college lab's tablet...
