Description Warning, pretty big file

Did this up for a buddy of mine who told me he's struggling with drawing heads at odd angles. Since I've been doing a lot of practice in that area, I thought I'd give doing a tutorial a shot!

Part 2 to follow, perhaps. I'm thinking I'll show a 3/4 rear shot for that one. A less commonly used angle, but an important one to master.

I don't claim to be an expert here, I'm just trying to show ya'll how I do things (I'm sort of re-learning as I go, in fact! 'Teaching' puts things into a different perspective). I hope it helps.

Critique of my method is encouraged if you see I'm doing something wrong and can help me out, or if you see I how could improve something, please let me know! I really appreciate any tips I can get

Same goes for all my deviations, really I want to get better! That's a big part of why I'm here.

Wow! I sould have looked at this sooner! I usually start with a circle, then the nose (with appropriate size) then connect it to the head for the muzzle, and free-draw from there. Your tutorial should make drawing heads much easier.

Actually, I've been starting to merge styles. It's easier to draw a head in good proportions if you do it the way you just stated

Waykum [2008-04-19 02:56:58 +0000 UTC]

pretty sweet tutorial

The way you did the muzzle was new to me. I'm more accustomed to drawing it outward from the intersection point of the 2 main crosses.

A bit of advice for the angle of the finished product, try drawing 2 eclipses from the original guidelines and draw a line going through both intersection points (I only thought of this 2 seconds ago; don't know if it'd work!).

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RedRodent In reply to Waykum [2008-04-19 05:25:41 +0000 UTC]

That's a very very good idea. Making the ellipses meet, then drawing a guideline through that? Very nice... I'll have to try it!

Acheron538 [2008-04-17 23:50:19 +0000 UTC]

You should do basic angles too such as from the sides and directly ahead of [hardest one for me], that'd be awesomely useful.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RedRodent In reply to Acheron538 [2008-04-18 00:35:32 +0000 UTC]

Directly ahead is kind of tough It depends on what kinda muzzle the character has, though.

ImpishVermin [2008-04-17 23:03:11 +0000 UTC]

Try adding the neck before you add facial details, that's also what I say.

Great work though. That's what I do, add the muzzle (or the eyes, varying) first.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RedRodent In reply to ImpishVermin [2008-04-17 23:39:37 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, yeah I should have put the neck in first.

This is a pretty good guide. Its sometimes hard to understand how refining the underlying work helps but not just a step-by-step but a line-by-line REALLY shows alot here!
