Description Thank God for Firefox- after about a month of failing to upload stuff on Internet Explorer 8, I try through that and all my problems are instantly solved (well- all my dA uploading prolems anyway).

After seeing some fantastic examples online, I thought I'd attempt my own photomosaic, from scratch, using GIMP- and here's the result. A quick explanation;

I started off with university (Lancaster) photos as I have loads of them and went through all of them, recording their brightness histograms (and, initially, their separate R, G, B channels, but I abandoned this after a while) and reducing them to 100 x 75 pixels each.

After that, I set up a 2400 x 1800 gridded file, and did a draft of my pattern on paper.

Then I put the brightest photos on the white Yang, and the darkest on the black Yin and then went from next darkest to lightest from top to bottom (the drawback of this is that, I had to duplicate most photos twice- and this makes it fairly obvious)

Finally, I used a rainbow gradient as a separate layer for the b/ground.

Anyway, hope you like this. I might do a bigger one one day- if I've ever got loads and loads of spare time. Thoughts/ comments welcome as ever

Update
Just to let you know, I've added a new version of this, having got rid of all the white spaces. These might have just been only one pixel wide, but they were a wee bit annoying...and they took two hours to get rid of... Grr... Enjoy

Wow, this looks great! You did a wonderful job crafting the yin & yang symbol out of the photos, and I like the colored gradient around it. Well done!

Wow, this looks like it took a lot of patience. The thumbnail really grabbed my attention and the full view is spectacular! I especially love the color spectrum in the background.

Thanks. This is a strange one for me as I basically created it for me and my friends but it's become by far and away my most popular piece. Not that I'm complaining or anything
