Description
Season 11 is a season with a very varied opinion on it. Some people adore this season, some people despise this season. I personally like this season, but I wouldn't call it anything amazing, nor horrible. For the most part, this season was a continuation of what season 10 did. The animation looks great, but once again, the plots, characters, and humor did get pretty dumbed down, although there is still a significant amount of shines of great writing here. In fact, this season produced one of my favorite episodes since season 5, No Pictures Please, thanks to just how hysterical this episode was.
I noticed that the humor of this season feels a bit more juvenile than usual. This is especially the case with most of the episodes involving Patrick this season, since a lot of the time he's just there to make a random face or shove his ass on the screen. He still has some brilliance left (once again, No Pictures Please is genius), but in-general this character became a lot more annoying. The rest of the characters are still fun to watch, with some really interesting episodes being produced such as Karen's Virus, which was a really cool Plankton-SpongeBob episode that also has fantastic visuals to boost, among others.
In-general the ideas here are a huge double-edged sword. Sometimes they can be brilliant and creative such as Ink Lemonade or The String, but other times you get garbage like Doodle Dimension or Bubbletown. Doodle Dimension especially feels really lazy with the fact that it takes place on a BLANK BACKGROUND for the entire runtime and most of it looks cheap and unprofessional. Not to mention the episode itself was just really dumb and only existed to pander to fans with DoodleBob's return.
As much as I like the animation here, you can notice that this is where they started going a bit too far with it, with episodes that simply spray the fuck out of these expressions which can sometimes be quite annoying. While some episodes made this work, such as Ink Lemonade (unpopular opinion, this episode's hilarious), or Krabby Patty Creature Feature, other episodes such as Fun-Sized Friends could get really gruesome with it, with a lot of unsettling expressions and gross-ups. It was something I noticed throughout this season and simply annoyed me a lot.
Like I said, this season is still quite enjoyable like S10, but aspects such as characters become less interesting (especially Patrick), less idea creativity in-general, and dumbing down of both plots and humor showcase even further the decline since 9B. Don't get me wrong, this season has some great, even AMAZING content, but this season also packs itself with other garbage which simply made this season more annoying to watch. It really is the biggest mixed bag the show offered, but at the end of the day the good stuff makes this season worth revisiting. At the very least it's more interesting than something like season 8.
