For years and years, my main mode of getting around was through public transportation. If it was going to work, going to school, or even just to go anywhere, I was constantly on the move. However, the public transportation system I used isn't exactly the fastest in the world. Between having to wait for trains and busses, frequent train delays, and just riding to where I needed to go, on average I would spend at least 4 hours of my day in the subway.

So, I would listen to music or podcasts to pass the time. But sometimes I would sketch the people I see. When riding the trains, you see all kinds of people; students, businessmen, homeless people, tourists, performers, and sometimes other artists.

But just recently this year, I finally got myself my own car, and its been a huge change that I've come to embrace when it comes to getting around. However, while I can't say I miss riding the trains all the time, I will credit it as being one of things that made it easier to figure out where to go in the city.

This was a piece I had been meaning to get around to ever since the beginning of this year. I'm surprised, with a much as I drew on subway I never did a full finished piece featuring it. But putting it together turned out to be a lot harder than expected. Its not often I do crowded scenes, especially ones that feature linear perspective as well, so I had to do a lot of sketches before I finally settled on something that looked good. So I kept putting it off for later.

On top of the pen and ink used to do the line work, I used various sets of markers to color everything in. This included a few small sets of Winsor Newton Pro Markers that I was lucky to find at a Ross not too long ago. And while I could have easily blended in some shadows using markers, I decided to use watercolor pencils on top to give it a different look. For coloring, I took a tiny a bit of inspiration from the French artist Moebius. A lot of his work tends to be vibrant with color, and since subway has tons of colorful people, It just seemed to fit.

Since the paper I used for this piece was a little larger than usual, I ended up having to splice together two scans of it to get the full thing through Photoshop.
