Alright, so is it imagined to have a purpose beyond being an alarm clock? I am wondering whether the treads are meant to be functional, or simply decorative.

It's quite a while now since I did this piece so I can't exactly remind, but actually my idea was to do a clock with wheels, the chains were only added to make it look more intresting and unusual. Not that big of artistic thinking behind it after all.

Yes, it doesn't work, not really a problem ^^ It looks like that it was really useful n functionable tool. I like ur model here a lot. Looks really detail n accurate (although I didn't see anything like that for know what's accurate or not 
BTW, if you designed & managed to make this mechanical stuff actually works, u're just kinda Edison, ya know
