Description
Show: My Little Pony: Friendship is MagicEpisode: S3 E11
Year: 2013
Writer(s): Dave Polsky, Teddy Antonio (Story)
Reforming a major villain in any series is always taking a tremendous risk. If not done properly, it can come off as rushed or an ass-pull. Bringing back the fan favorite villain for this task is basically out of the frying pan and into the fire. And it becomes and even greater risk when an actual fan of your show writes said reformation. Yes, this episodes story came from Teddy Antonio, a 13 year old Brony. This is the series first blatant attempt at fan submitted content that wasn't already subtler done. Even so, while he did submit the story idea and basic outline, it's Dave Polsky who touched it up and put the idea to the screen. So let's see how the episode holds up shall we?
Celestia wants Fluttershy to reform Discord for an unknown purpose. I'll get this out of the way now before it becomes a distraction, but this episode is really, really funny, even funnier than "Too Many Pinkie Pies", and if you manage to make an episode with Discord not funny, I'm going to punch you in the throat and balls. I will admit the episode itself is very contrived in many places, mainly due to the pacing and Celestia being a cryptic bullshitter. I get why she specifically selects Fluttershy to reform Discord, but it would've been better to have each of the Mane Six interact with him at different points more often. Also, I don’t know if it's nitpicking but how can Celestia make a spell so Discord can't take the elements when he's stronger than her?
This episode has some very good visuals here; there's always something happening with no real pauses to the plot, whether it’s Fluttershy's house rotating, a homage to Beauty and the Beast, or even the demonic beavers in the background building a giant dam. Speaking of beavers, Mr. Beaverton Beaverteeth is awesome; such language! One of the biggest issues with this episode is the fact that Twilight even has spells that can reform others. Yeah, I know technically that's how Princess Luna was reformed but that was a special circumstance; you can't just cast those willy-nilly and make anyone whatever you want them to be against their will. And the fact that they'd even suggest using spells like that makes them no better than Discord. Which brings up an interesting point: Discord wins here no matter what happens. Either A. he gains a friend and his freedom, B. the Mane Six put him back into stone (since he doesn't care either way) and they let Celestia down, or C. he gets mind-raped and the Mane Six become villains. Either way, he wins. What a magnificent bastard, indeed.
I will admit Fluttershy can seem somewhat out of character and oblivious to some watching the episode, but I could totally see what she was doing. Being able to show kindness and friendship to more abrasive types, those who want nothing to do with friends is a noble effort; although in many cases, it's sometimes futile. But if they didn't even give Discord this chance, they'd be going against the very message of the show itself. Besides, Discord never seemed evil to me; he's was more chaotic neutral, if anything. He just never thought to give friendship a chance, and others saw him as a monster for it among other things. And if you do that, he's bound to act like an evil monster. In a nutshell, Fluttershy was able to appeal to Discord's better nature and coerce him into accepting a friendship; not by force or trickery, but by giving him freedom and teaching him limits and boundaries, something no pony has ever had the courage to do before.
Now about what Fluttershy said here: "I'm just trying to earn his friendship anyway I can, so that he'll trust and listen to me"; many can take this like as to mean Fluttershy never meant to really be Discord's friend and she was just trying to control him to form a one sided relationship. I don't see it this way; I think what Fluttershy meant was that she's trying to show him that he's important to her, and to get him to use his chaotic powers more positively. She would never try to control someone by force. , or The Voice of Reason, said it best in his review, that this episode’s moral is utilizing the core concept of the show and for people to go against its moral means they don't understand a thing about this series or what it's trying to do.

Great review!
I honestly don't see why this ep is hated, it's really imaginative in its own way.
Now that you defended this ep and spike at your service, why don't you do a 1001 on mystery on the friendship express. It's a really good ep that doesn't get the hate that it deserves.

In all honesty, Discord may be my favorite character of the show. He's the most flawed, and he's one I really root for when he portrays his good side.

I agree. That episode is very important to the overarching plot. Without that episode, we'll never know how Discord got un-stoned.
