Description
Show: Courage the Cowardly DogEpisode S2 E1a
Year: 2000
Writer(s): John R. Dilworth
This is one of the weirdest jealousy stories I've ever seen. The idea of a wish-granting tree is definitely a concept Courage the Cowardly Dog could've run with in at least 100 different directions. And to be totally honest, I can almost understand Eustace's jealously towards this tree and his desire to chop it down. It doesn't justify it, but at the very least I get why he wanted to do the deed. The best part is just watching Courage keep the tree safe while Eustace tries killing it in overly cartoonish fashions akin to Wile E. Coyote. And as for the tree itself: next to the Hunchback of Nowhere, he's the best one-shot character of the entire show; he is truly all loving. Even as he stares down his own demise, he shows no fear, and even tells Eustace off for how selfish he's being. And yes, in case you're wondering, Eustace gets an amazing dose of karma for essentially committing murder. And I'm not entirely sure, but I think the tree might have been some sort of allegory for Jesus or something, but I don't really care.
As you might have noticed, the tree's mouth is done using Synchro-Vox; you know, that technique used in shitty cartoons from the 50s with no budget like Clutch Cargo or The Annoying Orange. This is an example of how I believe the technique SHOULD be used. Synchro-Vox is great at making things really uncanny and creepy looking, and this is one of the best uses of the technique I've ever seen; the others being in The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy and Class of 3000, all of which made use of it to make some honestly scary as hell stuff, not used to cut corners on actual animation and save on character movements. Robot Chicken also uses this technique well, and yes, I do consider their paper mouths a form of Synchro-Vox.
Courage the Cowardly Dog is owned by Cartoon Network, Stretch Films and Turner Broadcasting.

I never noticed before but I like how you noticed the tree had no fear of being chopped down. Debatable if he was trying some mind trick with eustace by trying to make him think he wouldn't chop him down if he realized he was doing it just to prove something but yeah, I like how he wasn't bargaining or pleading with him.
he had a wish granting tree. Any other episode eustace would be trying to make cash off it. And that could have been some allegory for the miss use of nature / Jesus reference if the tree sacrificed a little of his health to grant each wish.

I fixed a few errors in your review summary, so do the same thing as always:

This is a good episode of Courage here. Sad that the tree had to be cut down but it was for Muriel's sickness no thanks to Eustace the way he is with his selfishness.

It usually works in 2-3 minute skits, but not as an 11 minute TV show.

Memorable quotes from "The Magic Tree of Nowhere":
Eustace: I've never grown anything. Not even weeds! But that stupid dog can grow trees. Argh!
Muriel: Eustace, how do you like the new kitchen curtains?
Eustace: Yeah. Blah, blah, blah.
Muriel: And they came with a complimentary packet of seeds.
Eustace: What? Seeds? Ain't nothing grown here in 50 years.
Muriel: Where are your marbles? We need this tree, Eustace. It's providing for us.
Eustace: But that's my job... rotten tree.
Eustace: How about breakfast?
Muriel: No, thank you, Eustace. I couldn't eat a bite.
Eustace: I meant for me.
Magic Tree: Will cutting me down make you feel important?
Eustace: Umm... yes!
Sea Monster: *singing "Oh, Danny Boy"* Oh, Danny Boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling.
Eustace: This is all your fault, dog. You and that rotten tree! Now I'm gonna have to order takeout for breakfast.
Dr. Vindaloo: *as usual* There's nothing to worry about, but there's nothing I can do.
Eustace: Chop! Chop! Chop! Down ya go!

The death of the tree is one of the saddest scenes of the show, next to the death of the space squids couples.
