There are no cardinal points in the Loop. There is no west and east, no north and south (Siberia and Australia are sometimes referred to as north and south respectively - due to the prevailing climate - but rarely). Despite the presence of gravity, there is no magnetic field. Compasses are useless. The sun moves across the sky along a random trajectory, albeit at a constant speed, and there even can be more than one sun at times. The moon and stars play the same tricks at night. It is possible to navigate the world only by large buildings, which are unlikely to change their position and, moreover, because of the cyclical nature, actively resist any efforts to change it.

Because of this, the maps at each base are most often placed so that your "home" sector is at the bottom. The physical borders form a circle, which also comes in handy when you need to rotate the map. Having a round world is handy. A small round world is even more handy.
