Description
Don't Breed...
Adopt!
------------------------
I used to see this exact sayings on bumper stickers plastered to the sides and backs of adoption cars. I used to just roll my eyes. But that was before I started volunteering at my local animal control center. Now I totally agree with it. There are so many homeless dogs and cats in just my local shelter, not inccluding all the other ones in Tucson and the US, or the world, that now it seems almost silly to keep bringing more puppies and kittens into the world.
Now, this is NOT saying in any way that if you go and purchase a perfectly papered, well bred animal that you are a bad person, please do not think of it that way! If you want a papered dog, then that's your choice. I know that lots of people make their living off of breeding. I'm simply putting this up because I've talked to so many people who have admitted that they had no idea how bad the homeless animal situation has gotten, so basically it's a notice to get the word out!
----------------------------
If you're thinking about getting a pet, I urge you to visit your local shelter before finding a breeder! If it's a matter of "I want a purebred dog" I bet you can find one. I know for a fact that my shelter has 2 purebred St. Benards, 1 purebred German Sheppard (and he is a beauty!), a purebred border collie, 2 pure Golden Retrievers, and then of course all shapes and sizes of pit bullsΒ
------------------
Please feel free to put this in your journal or wherever you put stamps! Just don't re-post it as your deviantion plz!
Edit: Was not trying to say breeding is OMG SO HORRIBLE. I honestly really don't care if you buy from a breeder or not and am WELL aware that good breeding holds a place.Β

Originally we were going to breed my GSD, Sandy, but not only would she refuse to stand for the male dog (LOL poor troy), she has a history of being ill alot, so we had her spayed... Tho during that they discovered she also had cancer!
Shes fine now and I'm glad i didn't breed her, it would be unfair for her and the litter.
My sisters dog unexpectantly had pups tho, and we adopted 2 of them, so now we have 4 dogs! >XD
And they're all neutered!
(my sis got her dogs neutered too, she kept a pup with the mother lol, so theres a family of 3 brothers and their mother in our pack >XD - 6 dogs haha)
Now every time I hear someone considering to breed their dog I get worked up D;
I don't wanna breed my dogs, or any i get in the future, there are far too many homeless ones right now, I'm glad I backed out of the idea with sandy before it was too late

I adopted my hamster, but they said that you usually can't find Teddy Bear Hamsters at petsmart or petco. They told me I may have to get one from a breeder. But luckily I didn't have to!

I saw plenty of beautiful, well behaved, and pure-bred dogs at our shelter when I used to volunteer there (darn college for making me move 7 hours away! lol). It's really a great message to spread (as well as spay and neuter!! Ridiculous how many animals end up in the shelter from people being too lazy/cheep to get their pet fixed!). But props to this stamp! lol

In such crazy countries as ours, many people are still dumb when we talk about cats or dogs. These people say "Π‘astration is sin! This is unacceptable! Animals like to mate and give birth to their offspring! Every creature must do it!" etc. They prefer to breed dogs\cats while our streets are full of stray animals (because some people, who get puppy/kitten, also don't know much about dogs\cats. They think that pets are fluffy toys or all-sufficient creatures or perfect robots...).
Our people are wild. They rarely feed stray animals, but they almost NEVER take animals home or search for a good owner for these animals...
Our animal shelters, if we can call them so, are poor. Ordinary people are also poor (especially now), and governance are too greedy to care about ordinary...creatures.

i can't agree more.
People now a days are more concerned with "well my dog is cuter than your dog." And, as a bonus, they'll get animals without doing their homework first, and then turn right around and abandon/kill/turn loose because of something stupid like it getting "too big." Now I'm sorry, but if you go out and buy a great dane puppy when you live in a subdivision or something like that, then that's your own fault. The animal shouldn't have to suffer. But that's appearently the way it works. Seeing those animals makes me loose faith in humanity.
Ex:
At our shelter, someone dropped off a 9 YEAR OLD German shepherd. Why? Becuase they decided "oh let's move to an appartment." Then, on the day of our adoption fair, someone took her home an hour before, kept her long enough to miss it, and then brought her back the next morning. It was enough to make me cry.
While I know it's not going to happen, I wish and hope humanity will let go of their selfish ways and treat our creatures better. But they won't. Why? "Because humanity comes first!"
If this is what "humanity" is, then I'm checking out.

I think the situation would be better if more people thought of their pets as living things instead of as accessories or playthings. I've heard of people getting rid of their cats because they didn't match the new upholstery or their dogs because the dog got too big (usually when it was some breed like a lab or a St. Bernard, too, which everyone KNOWS are large dogs.) One of the most endearingly friendly cats I've ever known came to us after having been thrown out of a moving car. People need to learn empathy for their animals. Maybe then they'd start treating other humans better too.

Don't forget, though, that GOOD breeders are doing a service to animals by breeding out health problems.
I have rats, and they're not healthy animals. But with careful breeding by knowledgable people, we've managed to improve their health a lot.
Without those people, rats as a species would be routinely dying at a year of age, and being riddled with tumours and respiratory problems. In fact, a lot of rats still are, which is what makes their work all the more important.
And before you shout at me about 'not understanding', bear in mind I run a rescue I also worked at the RSPCA for a while, and currently work at a vet. I've had to deal first hand with the animals that no-one wants, and even had to be involved in euthanising some of them. So I get it. I fully support rescue. But I also fully support good, ethical, responsible breeding.
You can support both. In fact, most good breeders I know also work in rescue too.

oh no, i totally agree with that. No doubt about it. Especially in the cases of big dogs with hip displasia, like sheppards and st. Bernards.
I'm mostly talking about inreasponsible breeding, such as inbreeding and stuff like that. You can of course support breeding, which is why I put a note in the artist comments that this is not annoucning that breeding is wrong and you're a bad person or anything.
Don't worry, I totally get your point and quite honestly I think you understand my point very well!

I agree in the sense that it ultimately comes down to making a choice based on what works for your family. I also volunteer with my local shelter so I know all the bad, but I also recognize the place responsible breeding has in the dog world. That is, breeding to actually improve the chosen breed. I'm not too keen on people who breed dogs for the soul purpose of earning themselves a living, though. I like to see some overall goal, you know?
Pits actually are 'registrable', as well. With the UKC. Of course, most Pit Bulls you see on the streets are all over the place as far as shape and such goes, as you said. And Heelers (I'm assuming you're talking about Australian Cattle Dogs? Otherwise known as the Queensland Heeler) can be registered with the AKC.
Anyway, cool stamp. I'm definitely for adopting when possible. Oh and please don't think I was trying to be overly critical or snobby (I'm not sure if my comment came off like that), I just love talking dogs/animals/etc. with people and happened to come by your stamp by chance.

No worries, your comment didn't come out like that at all! >< sorry I'm so late with this reply, I know you sent it like last year, but just didn't have the time!
Anyway, I've always been told pits and heelers weren't registrable. That's really cool that they are!
And yes, RESPONSIBLE breeding does indeed have it's place! It's the bad, greedy breeders who practice inbreeding that need to be stopped. And those are usually the ones who are breeding for a living. I wouldn't mind them doing so, if they were responsible about it. But most are not, and then you have even more health problems.
And hey! I love talking about the animal stuff too, so no worries at all!

I totally agree :3 My family as always had purebreds, admittedly (but what kid has a choice in what dog breed they get? ) But when I get properly settled in a house I'm going to adopt a dog for sure.
The main reason Dad was adament in getting our German Shepherds from breeders is because our first Shepherd (not from a proper breeder) had horrible Hip Dysplasia and had to be put down because of it. He wanted to be sure that the dogs we got were clear of it/less likely to get it, so we went to reputable breeders.

RejectAll-American In reply to Totalrandomness [2009-07-20 21:35:50 +0000 UTC]
Hehe, don't worry, I'm guilty too!
--------
And in the case of sheppards and big dogs like them, I can totally agree with going to a good breeder. Hip dysplasia is a very common factor, and so is inbreeding. Breeders nowadays are so greedy that they'll breed any male to any female it seems, reguardless of whether or not it's healthy. I too had an old sheppard who had to be put down bc of hip problems, and circulation problems. I also recently was at the vet's, and saw an old sheppard coming in to be put down. Poor baby, he was beautiful, but his front legs worked and his back legs didn't. So in the case of big dogs, and heelers, I totally agree with your dad 100%, and that's responsible pet owning, if I might add!

never mind. She got adopted on friday!!!! She was 1 and a half years. I'm so excited for her!! I just hope they don't bring her back. We had 2 others that I was really close to (Jeff and Frankie) who were adopted and then brought back for unknown reasons. Gets on my nerves when people bring them back without even letting them get settled in. Jeff (with an unneeded F, so really it's Jef-fa-fa
) is a 3 yr old black lab mix, and Frankie is a Sheppard mix puppy (probably about eight months or so!), if you're interested in a dog...
If you are, I'll sneak you through the back door early so you can have your pick before the crowd comes at 10:00. If you're looking for a really good dog, I would suggest Phantom. Not only is he a good looking somebody, but he's also the sweetest thing in the pound, and I mean that litterally. His face is half black, half white, and he had dalmation spotting over a pit bull build. Better hurry up tho, he doesn't have long.
unfortuneately, PACC isn't a "No kill" zone. Call me if you're interested, we could save Phantom!

Animal "CONTROL" Center. I think they give them 90 days once they hit the adoption line. Trust me, they don't want to kill them, but with all the homeless pets that come in day after day, they can't keep all of them. But if Phantom reaches the rescue list, I'm going to call every no kill animal shelter in Arizona. I'm determined to save his life. I personally can't take him, but I'm sure that if the right person sees him he'll get a home.
