Description
Don't Breed...
Adopt!
------------------------
I used to see this exact sayings on bumper stickers plastered to the sides and backs of adoption cars. I used to just roll my eyes. But that was before I started volunteering at my local animal control center. Now I totally agree with it. There are so many homeless dogs and cats in just my local shelter, not inccluding all the other ones in Tucson and the US, or the world, that now it seems almost silly to keep bringing more puppies and kittens into the world.
Now, this is NOT saying in any way that if you go and purchase a perfectly papered, well bred animal that you are a bad person, please do not think of it that way! If you want a papered dog, then that's your choice. I know that lots of people make their living off of breeding. I'm simply putting this up because I've talked to so many people who have admitted that they had no idea how bad the homeless animal situation has gotten, so basically it's a notice to get the word out!
----------------------------
If you're thinking about getting a pet, I urge you to visit your local shelter before finding a breeder! If it's a matter of "I want a purebred dog" I bet you can find one. I know for a fact that my shelter has 2 purebred St. Benards, 1 purebred German Sheppard (and he is a beauty!), a purebred border collie, 2 pure Golden Retrievers, and then of course all shapes and sizes of pit bullsΒ
------------------
Please feel free to put this in your journal or wherever you put stamps! Just don't re-post it as your deviantion plz!
Edit: Was not trying to say breeding is OMG SO HORRIBLE. I honestly really don't care if you buy from a breeder or not and am WELL aware that good breeding holds a place.Β

I completely agree with you. I find it disturbing that people make money off of breeding because pets aren't objects they are family. Buying a bred dog encourages them to breed more. So not only are more dogs in shelters being killed but female dogs have to suffer always giving birth.

If anyone is going to buy a dog, I surely hope that they look into the breed and breeder. A responsible breeder is perfectly fine to buy from, though, shelter dogs are great as well.Β

I'd actually want a pampered dog... I always wanted and Akita or a Caucasian mountain dog. I never find those at the shelter, sadly. Also, there is many other reasons why I would rather get a pet from a breeder. ;-; I actually really want to be a breeder when I'm older...

You are saying people need to get more educated on adoption. To me, it seems as though you also need to get educated on good breeders, and I guess breeding in general.
I am (and many breeders beside me) would be the first person to say that backyard breeders, people who are having a litter with just their pet dogs for fun and puppy mills are the worst places for dogs to be bred (and I'm sure you agree with me). I also can say, with pretty high certainty, that the three things I listed above are the main (if not only) sources that dogs come from in shelters (for dogs that are surrendered by families, chances are, they knowingly or maybe unknowingly got a pet from one of the above).
Any good, reliable and reputable breeder would never let one of their dogs go to a shelter. In EVERY good breeder's contract, it says that a puppy/dog MUST be returned to the breeder if no longer wanted, and may never go to a shelter.
If you work at a shelter, I'm sure you know of the many emotional issues that shelter dogs have. Not every family (especially one with children, whom cannot risk one of their kids getting bitten or injured) is prepared to battle with these issues. There is no way to know much of a shelter dog's past, and you certainly can't blame the shelters for that!
My aunt has 3 large shelter dogs. All three have behavioral issues. She has been bitten countless times, my sister has been bitten, and the dogs are constantly getting into fights. Two of the dogs, because of their behaviors, had been constantly getting taken back to the shelter to find another home. This is an occurrence that I'm sure you see often.
Before my mom got her first Sheltie, my parents got a shelter dog. He was a huge, adorable, but awful dog. He was a terrier/spaniel/who knows what else mix, that was pretty much a dog that only made trouble. Besides eating money, walls, shoes (which he did continuously), even through multiple tries at training, still no success. My mom continuously leaving training crying, decided that they could no longer keep him. This was long before I was born, and I can't remember wether Oliver was put down or returned to the shelter. Either are very sad events that unfortunately had to take place.
Along with these reasons, I have just one other thing I want to add.
Put on your mind, all breeders gone (including both conformation and working, etc) only shelter dogs left. I believe, but can't be certain, that most shelters spay/neuter the dogs (Perhaps if this hypothetical situation were to come true, they wouldn't). Not only would the majority of dogs be gone, but the quality of dogs would very quickly decrease. People could not rely on dogs always being the great companions they are today, and would have much harder time finding a dog that suits their particular needs (chances are 'breeds' would no longer be in existence). Someone who wanted a challenging dog wouldn't be able to go and find a great Terrier to give them challenges, a big Dobe to love them, but also protect them, even if just by their threatening looks. Someone who wants a smart dog for obedience, such as a Poodle or Aussie, might have a harder time finding a dog that suits them.
Police force and military would not be able to as heavily rely and trust animals if the dog was not 100% sure of himself and mentally stable.
Although shelter dogs can make great pets, they certainly are not the best choice for everyone. Some people need to be able to rely on the dogs they own more than others, and so going to a reputable breeder is the best way to find a dog that they can rely on.
I am a big advocate for shelters. So are many other breeders! A lot of people can find a great pet at a shelter, and when getting a pet, both are very good options for most families and individuals.
However, canines would never successfully survive without good breeders. Without good breeders, peoples only choice would be shelters, per shops and backyard breeders. Puppy mills would flourish, and we could all pretty much say goodbye to many of the dog sports we have today.
Please take all of this into consideration the next time that you critique breeders and 'papered' dogs, as you call them.
Thank you for reading this and considering some of what I have said and think from my point of view. I in no way think that shelters are bad. Without shelters, many dogs would be in very poor conditions that they would be forever stuck in. They would never feel love that they get when placed in a permanent or foster home. I in no way mean any disrespect to you, or any shelters.

Alrightttt... I don't know why I'm putting this, but may aswell. xD
Ody - Got from another owner. (Alive)
Tiggy - Got from a farm. (Alive)
Lola - Got from the same farm as Tiggy. (Dead - Long story)
Beefy - Tiggy and Ody's son.
Red - Tiggy and Ody's son.
Now, the reason we have two dogs that were born, was because the female (Tiggy) was in season, so we couldn't help that even though we tried to keep them apart. xI Honestly we tried to keep that from happening.. Buuut.. >.> Yeah.. Freaking 5 litters. Damnit Ody. -.-
We've had both the dogs neutered now, so yay. ;3 No more puppies giving me horrid scratches.

i agree! poor pups getting bred at young ages, people should really think about stuff like that, a year to two year old dog is only 7 - 14 people have problems with humans getting prego that young. its not fair to the puppy, its still a kid, it makes me sick to see stupid people do that to poor animals, besides great dogs are often rescue dogs along with any other animal.

Ah, ok!
So firstly to use a stamp you have to have a subscription. Then on the right side bar you'll see a link ( :thumb-numberhere: ), you copy and paste that where you want it.

I would've adopted my next dalmatian if any of my local pounds had one available.
Though, once I move out in a few years, I plan on adopting a few poor lil souls, and working at the local pound.
All dogs need love.

Whenever someone I know is looking for a new pet, I always urge them to adopt. For every single animal that's killed in a shelter there is a human out there responsible for it's death. 3
Hell, now you can go to a shelter and about 25% of the dogs are purebreeds that people have given up for ridiculous reasons (ie - "it got to big" [how big did you think a great dane was going to get ffs? -.-], "it is too hyper" [yeah... certain breeds can be], "it is digging up my yard" [really... you didn't think your terrier was going to dig??]). So many people fail to do their research on breeds of dogs they want and instead just go out and buy them.
I agree with breeding to a point. There needs to be way stricter laws on it to make it completely okay. (Having the females only being bred 1-2 times a year. Needing a license and having regular inspections.) Just anyone shouldn't be able to breed a dog. Backyard breeders and Puppy/kitten Mills need to be shut down.

Braemoor In reply to Arixco [2014-01-22 10:15:29 +0000 UTC]
Stricter laws don't do anything about the breeders that are the problems. They only hurt good, responsible breeders.
Also, no reputable breeder would let their dog go to a shelter (terms in contracts don't allow buyers to do so).
