Description I was asked about how I draw my eyes~
So I didn't really make a "tutorial" but rather just: a couple pieces of information that dictate how I go about drawing eyes. Because showing a step by step wouldn't help anyone, since I do all the form-constructing in my head, plus have the shape of the curves engraved into my instinct by now.
So it technically would be: draw circle -> do squiggly lines surrounding it until it looks like eye

Btw, the reason why I included screenshots from the anime Bakemonogatari as reference, is because it's thanks to that show's art style that I realized a couple years ago you could stylize eyes in such a simple but goodlooking way (using varying thickness of countours surrounding iris and pupil,, plus indicating the cone-shape by not placing the pupil in the center )

Bonus: data.whicdn.com/images/2026633…

The thing with the highlight I actually just learned recently, and I was immediately baffled by how much of a difference it made,, but hightlights being the area on the shape closest to the lightsoucre / where the light hits most directly ((something like that)) - it makes sense that it would look better once it's not just randomly placed

But really, it all just comes down to understanding the shapes :I I have no idea wether or not this is helpful in any way???

The fantastic volumes of the eyelids cupping the eyeballs is satisfying for me.

I never even knew about the whole "highlight being inverted" thing

Normally I'm so observant regarding eyes, so its sort of surprising to realize there's something I never really saw??

why does that happen? like, whats the anatomy of the iris that does it?
Is it because the iris is actually a dip into the pupil? therefore there's a "valley" of sorts that doesn't get the light but the other side does?

Hmm the dip/valley might be more an illusion seeing as the iris has a small raised transparent "hill" (the cornea) while the iris comparitavely is simply flatter

but since you usually don't have the right angle to draw something like this:
petagogo.files.wordpress.com/2…
it's easier to replicate the effect by imagining the iris being in the middle of a dipped cone-shape. And because the cornea is still a round hill, the highlight will be where the light hits directly onto the shape.

It might not be 100% correct, but seeing as the pupil is situated deeper than the iris in any case, is will still give off a feeling of looking right

Those are some really helpful tips! I never realized that the highlight actually goes over of the cast shadow... thank you for this!

I sadly have completely forgotten where I actually picked up on that bit of information,, it's just such a small detail, and yet the impact it has on the whole look is so notable :'00

Ooh the light dot trick is neat, never thought about it o.o
I agree, most step by steps of eyes are often useless when they just show how to punch different color layers on the eye...
I got a ton of problems with eyes, mostly the lids, I never manage to give the eye volume, especially in corporation with eyebrows, nose and cheek.
You got advice on learning shaping and form-constructing stuff? I think it's one of my biggest problems with art in general... or is it just drawing it over and over and with a bit of luck you get it somewhen?

I recommend studying portrait photos, and actually breaking down the face into it's shapes,, it certainly helped me a ton :'0 or just simply lots and lots of observation
Studies: faces 1
Studies: faces 2
Keep in mind things like bone structure and facemuscles

But I have no idea what advice to give to learn how to understand. Sometimes it's the most random thing that can give you that "click" sensation; where suddenly things simply make sense,, so I guess just be on lookout for random information that might be helpful?? (there are so many different methods to construct a face)
