Description Second take at Null's run, this time with the addition of some fancy nonsensical smoke
<-previous one

Kinda a mix between dog and horse? Btw, if you're like me and always mix up the step-pattern of which leg comes in which order,, simply google rotary gallop and transverse gallop, then pick the one you find looks better
I think, compared to the last run cycle, I've improved on the rhythm?

I'm slowly becoming the kind of artist that stops their projects just to start new ones, aren't I

Here's some music that I recommend to anyone who also wants to animate some running stuff:

Like I mentioned I tried mixing in some horse features in this run as well,, since this isn't a creature that exists x:
There's a part in the 'animator's survivor kit' that explain how horses' spine is way less flexible and the main movement is more of a switching between slightly tilting forward and slightly tilting backwards
( Looking at photo reference barely shows any of that, tho www.awn.com/sites/default/file… )

I know that there wouldn't be much improvement if I now did the exact same canine run as the last one,, and the end goal for those is simply to be as close to realism as possible. Thus logically, there's more room for improvement and experimentation at coming up with non-existent creatre runs.

I see. If this creature is more horse-like, then the spine having less movement would make sense. I suppose that because at first glance (at least to me), it looked more dog-like I expected for the run cycle to be that way too.

the rhythm is definitely a lot better!! Β the torso and body in general should be moving a lot more, though. Β the whole body moves while running. Β the spine should bend the opposite way when the back legs are off the ground and the torso should bop up when the front legs make impact with the ground

I tried to mix horse anatomy with dog, though I could've probably lenghtened the legs more to convey that better. The one thing I know about spinal movements on horses is that it's very stiff and limited in it's bending :I
I had this video in mind when planning the key poses with the way the chest related to the hips: youtu.be/BEw-2WBoNEA?t=61
But then looking back, I forgot to put some more focus on the stretch-compressed part

maybe it was just the stretchyness that it needs then! the movement of the legs is perfect though, and very nice for the neck and head!

Thank you!! I think next time I'll simply need to do a pure horse run cycle,, it wouldn't have hurt for this guy to look more 'horsey'.
Mixing two animals while only being partly familiar with one of them, and overly familiar with the other would logically lead to the creature leaning more heavily towards latter :I

Goodness such marvelous work! Yes very well done here! Say do you do 4 drawings per day in a sketchbook or something? Is that a good way to improve?

When I was still in school, I used to draw everyday inbetween classes and during breaks,, and yes of course it's a good way to improve :'0
You won't improve if you don't draw. Think of this; who do you think will have improved more after 1 year of drawing?Β  A: someone who drew 1 hour every day, or B someone who drew 2 hours everyday ? Just by adding one extra hour, person B is now 1 year ahead of person A's progress.

Though you don't have to quantify it like that, simply drawing every day is a good start, no matter if it's a sketch or if it's only been 10 minutes. As long as you draw something, it's a start. If you feel like drawing more, or for longer time then that's a bonus!
