Description
Hhhhhhhhh???? Heyhiya, might still be a bit until I'm back on track with being regularly active,, we'll start working on the student film-projects next week and I have no idea how things will go down in these next... 4 months? But anyways, since things where winding down towards the end of this semester, I had the time to just draw smth for myself during class (which is why there's not gonna be a video of this). But, I kept the different stages saved off in the layers, and I thought why not detail the different things and decisions I took during the process-
You can find my breakdown here: www.patreon.com/posts/zombie-t⦠(it's public for everyone!) if you have difficulties zooming in, right click and press "show image" but let me also know if anything is unclear/illegible and I can go over the steps in more detail.
Part of why I'm quite happy with this outcome, is because I had worried I wouldn't make much improvement due to me being less active online (previously, being active was my main source of learning) So I was partly surprised at this guy,, it kinda proved to me that it's not all about maximizing quantitiy, lol.
I feel the main improvement came from having worked on 1 background piece for class over the span of multiple months (though we have 3-5 hours a week) - just the process of having to spend a lot of time, working out shadow and lights on every different object and shape with meticulous attention, put things into perspective. To take the time necessary to rework shapes until things look right, and not just settle with "eh, passable".
With this piece, I focused on not resorting to all my learned habits when it comes to shading, and just focus on making it look correct. Many of my habits in terms on how to make smth look "finished" are too geared towards being as efficient as possible, saving time on unecessary risk. Which might be great in certain cases, but stops me often from just going back and refining, reworking.
and lol, there's still a big chunk of discovery ahead of me,, I want to be able to apply this type of exact rendering on more stylized artwork too
---
oh, and yeah, this isn't my take on the "horse with canine teeth" craze, not exactly,, since the facial details are only very vaguely referenced off of horses I'd be more comfortable with just calling it an undead thing

This is the most horryfying thing I have ever seen in my entire life. If I would encounterΒ a dog like this, I would probably just broke down in terror and could not even compose myself. Amazing piece, it simply oozes atmosphere Also I have a serious phobia of dogs so I might be a bit biased in my oppinion

This is a really awesome piece ! I love the colours chosen and those big cloudy hollow eyes are my favourite.
Thank you for sharing the process, I saved it for my next lot of "studying" I do.
I'v been having some difficulty working out methods artists use to achieve high detail and depth within their digital art, my art at the moment is a bit toon-ish and flat which is ok in some instances but I also want to be able to do more semi real/ realistic work. But my level of digital art only works in favour of my toon style for now. I'm still quite noob at the digital art game.
I am curious though, do you do most of your detailed works like this in B/W first or is it kinda like an artists preference thing? or used when creating particular types of images?
I'v seen some artist dive straight into colouring by using base colours and building from there, where as some like yourself her with zomdog use black and white then play with the colouring and render the image further.

Its a zombie and it still looks like it wants to play with you as all dogs do, considering zombies are just living dead creatures driven by their most base instincts maybe zombie dogs don't want to eat your brains because their overriding impulse is: "Throw the stick!"
