Description So, a parallax effect is probably most commonly seen when you're sat in a car, and see like, close things zoom by in a blur, while stuff further and further away move at a slower pace.

It's an effect that makes a background have depth when moving the camera horizontally. But in class we were shown a little clip with the effect inversed, further away -> faster, nearby -> slower. And it made for a weirdly eerie effect.

The scene we where shown was the opening shot of: www.youtube.com/watch?v=BEOveD… (still on my watch-list)

Wanted to test it out myself, so here we are :0

Image was drawn in photoshop, saved as 6-7 separate PNG files with transparent background, horizontally long strips, put into a video editor and keyframed the different planes to move at different amounts by the time the clip ends. Saved as video file, and put into a gif converter for uploading -> which is why the quality is so pixelated probs.

Is that basically like a camera is turning around while standing in place the whole time? Like just turns to the right.

I can't tell if it's a weird glitch from my laptop screen but if you scroll down very slowly as the gif moves, the colors seem to lag a bit and give this eerie glitch-video-like effect that amplies the overall vibe 1000% and I love it

OO I never thought about using the parallax inverted to simulate turning around, that's pretty cool!! The video you linked seems to have some other cool animation tricks with lights and perspective and depth..definitely added it on my watch list too hohoho!

:0 it looks like the scene is rotating!Β
Near objects orbit in a smaller radius so they dont move as much, but far away they move alot
so cool X3

The secret behind this effect is that it shifts the focus of the viewer. Distant objects move slower if the eyes are focussed on something in the distance (that's usually the case if you're driving in a car) while distant objects move faster if the eyes are focussed on something nearby β€” hence this inversed effect draws attention to whatever is in the foreground and shifts the background around it, resulting in a weird effect that's usually used to evoke the impression that the viewer is out of touch with his surroundings or that he's in an alien world, which is basically the case, because he doesn't focus on what's around him but rather on what's right in front of him.
