I always lightly grid up my page before i work on it and do the same for the reference so i get proportions and shapes correct.
If your doing faces personally i use 1 kind of pencil for the majority of it, usually a 2h or a HB and only use something like a 2B for the dark parts of the hair.
Using something liek a tortillon, a tissue, or even the end of your finger to dab over some shading youve just done to soften it helps with blending and can remove any graininess.

I think the main advise though is to take your time and be prepared to disregard anything ive just said if something else seems to work better for you, theres no single correct way to do things. Hope this helps
