might sound silly, but how exactly do you use the icon textures ?

no that isn't silly at all.
there are different ways to use icon textures. so maybe it is a kind of illness from me, but i cant use my own textures.
but i would say, depending on the signature, header or whatever you like to do with it, you could use it as a background and play a little bit with the layer options.
that's what i would do. xD sry if i can't help you (i hope my english is not too bad. :'D sry for mistakes)
