The story behind him is this:

‘‘After being defeated and thrown into the Soulnado by Nightwolf, Noob had unintentionally dissolved Quan Chi’s unearthly whirlwind and had been seemingly destroyed by it. But Quan Chi should have never resurrected Noob Saibot in the first place. Nor should he have enhanced his powers. Despite the Soulnado’s incredible power, the revenant he created had survived. Noob lived, but he had reverted back to his former state. The whirlwind had absorbed the powers given to him by the Sorcerer of the Netherrealm. Noob Saibot was no more; there was only Bi-Han. But he was weakened, battered and broken. His body was falling apart. And it could no longer maintain his cold state. He knew that if he was to survive, he would need the help of his former clan. The Lin Kuei. But his allegiance with the Netherrealm had broken all ties with his the Lin Kuei. He would have to sneak into the temple and help himself, for he had doubts that the Grandmaster would forgive his betrayal. He had reached the temple, and to his surprise and horror, he saw his former friend and ally, Sektor - who had undergone the Cyber-initiative – standing over his father’s slain body, and the Dragon Medallion in his hand. He had finally seized control of the Lin Kuei. Bi-Han remained unseen, and he quickly made his way to where the Cyber-Initiative project took place. For hours, he modified his body, painfully undergoing a partial cyber transformation, so that he may once again be able to control his body. He had no intention of relinquishing his soul, so he made sure he added only the necessary implants to survive. Hydro-tubes where implanted in chest to regulate his body temperature, and prevent his heart from freezing solid. His blood replaced by a non-freezing liquid which allowed him to manipulate the element once again. And a respirator was permanently attached to his throat to allow him to breath in the cold air. When the modifications where finished Bi-Han felt alive again for the first time in a long while. But he was just a flawed copy of his former self. He fled the Lin Kuei temple, knowing that once Sektor found out about him, he would order his execution. He hid in the shadows, away from prying eyes. After rigorous training, Bi-Han mastered his abilities once more, and had even unlocked more of his powers than he had ever thought possible. He vowed to undo the damage he had done while under the control of his former master, Quan Chi. Sub-Zero lived again…’’
