Not sure if you know this, but The Master was originally inspired by Moriarty. The creators thought The Doctor needed an evil equal.
Later Andrew Scott based his version of Jim Moriarty on John Simm's portrayal of the Master
meaning Moriarty inspired the Master
and The NuWho Master inspired the SHERLOCK Moriarty
also...apparently, it was going to be revealed that The Master was just all of the Doctor's worse personality aspects given physical form, but the actor passed away so they had to change the story.
