Description Shade meet Donna.

Eli is so cringey on religion she crosses into an innocent place. This is not something I am unfamiliar with growing up in poor rural Appalachia as a kid. While religion was not unknown to this extent, a lot of things were. You get state education boards who don't really care and kids who feel that disinterest. So you get a culture of almost tribal knowledge and an almost survivor's view of what's important. Government assistance - your air. Government food programs - your food and water. Housing is run-down, random, and the jobs scarce, sustenance-level, and hard.

Things outside that bubble can become fuzzy knowledge. You also get silly misplaced beliefs, like if some famous politician (pick your party) visited us all these factories and jobs would follow, and everything here would change...imagine that!

Thirty to forty years later...nothing much changes.

And these two think they think they can leave this place. A curse of false hopes and realities.

Hope is what's kept them alive. Hope that something would change eventually, if they could only wait one more day...

I love Shade's answer "Really? Wow...Amazing." I can hear the "okkaaayyyyy" tone in her voice.

Shade...I am sure she senses Eli's "Shade thinks I am crazy" feeling and doesn't want to challenge her or give any reason for Eli to distrust her or feel she is overly skeptical. She is in "nurse mode" where she doesn't want to make things worse, given Eli just had some sort of episode and she doesn't want to get Eli upset. Granted, given that world and that life, if someone started talking about a nice office and nice people at work who are going to pick us up....

When you start life with nothing, and you keep losing and falling behind...what keeps you going? I would add love to that list of things, even without hope, at least for me.

And again, what the character's don't know makes this moment special. In mainstream comic books, they would be planning how they are going to build the time machine right about now. They tell everyone everything, they tell the reader even more to that to the point of boredom, characters are sickeningly perfect and righteous, and nothing bad or permanent ever happens to our icons. It seems like the multinational companies that own comic books hire their children's book division to write stories sold to adults.
