Apparently some of you are Cassandra Cain fans, and why not?Β She's Asian, she wears her own gimp suit to the party, and she's yet another variation of Batgirl.Β That certainly checks a lot of boxes on the Heroine Peril application.I know the bat logo didn't turn out like I wanted it to but I'll keep working on it, maybe.

The muteness issue was resolved early on in the series which I guess was someone decided having a mute lead character was hard to write. Basically a telepath "fixed" her which... when you think about it is kinda problematic (as much as I hate that word) granted her inability to speak was a product of her upbringing.Β Regardless it's a weak point in an otherwise strong Batgirl run by writer Kelly Puckett.
The illiteracy thing... hoo boy was that a mess.Β So DC had this gimmick called "One Year Later" where there was this big time jump. Bill Willingham who was writing Robin at the time (and already in hot water for killing Stephanie Brown before she got better) was given editorial instruction that Cassandra was going to become a villainess with no instruction for how or why. Willingham who was unfamiliar with the character wrote a story where Cassandra was now suddenly an evil murderous stereotypical dragon lady who left clues in multiple languages and gave prolonged monologues. Also she killed Nyssa Al Ghul who was a brand new and fairly popular villainess at the time (that they later brought back in the Arrow tv-series but not the actual comics go figure.)Β Needless to say the whole story was a HUGE mess and fans of the prior Batgirl series just HATED it.
This story was supposed to be a set-up for Geoff Johns Titans East arc a story where the Teen Titans fought a bunch of evil teens gathered by Deathstroke, but Johns either had his own plan or outright ignored Willingham's story.Β So it turns out that Cassandra wasn't an evil dragon lady, she was just under the influence of some mind-control drug. People were happy to have Cass back but it was still a mess.
So as damage control for the whole thing DC announced a new Batgirl mini-series written by you guessed it: Bill Willingham the guy who messed up the character in the first place.Β A good chunk of the book was trying to reconcile the events of the Robin Story with Titan East and we learned that just prior to getting mind controlled Cass enrolled in an ESL class.Β Really it was that simple. Anyway the book had disappointing sales largely due to the fact no one trusted Willingham with the character so Cass was relegated to guest appearances under the name Black Bat until the New 52 continuity reboot and her reintroduction in Batman & Robin Eternal.

This is why I don't really pay attention to comics anymore.Β I gave up, mostly because comic writers (it happens with TV and movies too) fall into the trap of thinking they are smarter than the fans and so they destroy their own (or other people's) creations with complete disregard for established lore.Β Instead of comics now I read tvtropes because at least they make me laugh and help me be a better writer.

Now that's a cool suit texture, very futuristic. Almost looks like liquid...her face is scary like that, did the character always have no visible eyes? Not sure if I've seen this version of BG before.

Yeah, her "cowl" could double as a gimp mask.Β I think one of the comic covers actually came under fire for it appearing like she had a ballgag in her mouth and her outfit being very bondage-like.
As far as any image I can find of her, the eyes are always covered.

Super lovely... while the Black Bat costume from Batman Inc is my favorite I do have a soft spot for her original costume. Would love to see her with Poison Ivy or maybe Lady Shiva for a little mother/daughter bonding.
