Description
During the last couple days with the power out I had literally nothing to do but draw under lantern light. As such I got this rather large assortment of sketches I decided to submit in one large jumble about as close to I can figure TT does it lol. So starting from the top...*Nature Guardians so Far*
Here I started by drawing all of my previously drawn NG KCELL kaiju. From the upper left clockwise: Rainsha, Oakenrack, Dawnaria, Hydrune. They're starting to form something of a counterpart four-man band to the Apocalypse Bringers though there are more than four of them as my later sketches below will show. Hydrune and Rainsha are fairly solid though I wish there was more I could do with a flaming griffen and colossus stag. Being the dark eventually lead to me working out the next one...
*Duskizen*
The Nature Guardian of light and shadow, Duskizen is my token arachnid. I wasn't all 'that' pleased with the inner section of his legs but the head, thorax and adomen as well as the claw shapes were all things I liked and kept when I latter did the Bio Pic (which will be featured soon as I write it lol). I like the effect I created here of insinuating that he's black and shadowy without literally grinding him black and removing any line definition. I figure that he literally is his own light source. That shape on his back there is a glowing Ankh. In KCELL he is the origin of that symbol. His head combines aspect of spider and ant which removes the problems of 'how does he consume enough food?' that Gregole brought up years ago. The tendril whip stingers there are a neat little thing I added tie in all the various sub themes spiders have in popular fiction without being really blatant about it. I altered them slightly in the Bio Pic. Also in the Bio Pic I altered the legs from what you see here, they are more segmented and flexible then the pillars you see here. Overall a nice first pic of the next NG (I'll be starting on those after my to-do-list and Storm Family stuff is done).
*Raifu*
This guy is the last of the planned NG's. A pillar of power whose domain is the weather. I wanted a tiger, but not just a simple sabertooth design fix. Instead I added an element of Fuu Lion, inverted the saturation of the pelt (and not just him being a white bengal or something simple like that) gave him a battle scar and made two of his whiskers like a catfish and akin to electricity conductive lashes/feelers. His original name was going to be 'Solzo' but I realized that Gayan already had the 'power of the sun' angle going and I didn't feel like adding a 'nature does it better' aseop to that. As Gayan already demonstrates, the sun is beyond even the earth's control and anything that harnesses it can't be entirely in the planet's self interest. So instead Solzo became Raifu as a homage to the ancient asian weather deities. He walks on clouds...and thus was among the canidates that 'survived' the test with Dryton. His scar relates to his relationship with Marez. To put it bluntly, Raifu is to Marez what Rao is to Kenshiro from Fist of the Northstar. How do you think they got their respective scars hrm?
*Gayan*
Yep, it's the solar eagle again. Ultimately I decided there is nothing really special about that blade where the thumb digit is for each wing. Making a solid bar of razor alloy across the thing just makes flying with it impractical. The 'building cut wind shear' thing he can do will instead be something related to his solar abilities. Focused on keeping the main ways he differs from a mundane eagle, ie ornate beak and head, glowing eyes, large chest and very big talons.
*KCELL Main Cast*
Yes, I was so bored I actually went through the trouble of making a walking group shot of the Apocalypse Bringer KCELL's. From left to right: Shinji Yoma, Piper Reed, Rema Anderson, Tony Lancaster. I think I fudged Tony's body the most because he was at the edge of the page. I really should have angled his body somewhat and made him less blocky but oh well. Very rough size estimate of them all. Below all this are the KCELL Marks. Shinji's a redesign, Piper's is probably just WRONG but an interesting alternative, Rema's is canon, and Tony's isa bout as close to it as I remember. Through the group you can see my 'skeleton lines' I was using to help me flesh them in.
*Shandalar Monsters 1*
I eventually got tired of KCELL and whipped out my old Microprose Player's Guide (I probably have the only one that exists in the entire state) for their Magic the Gathering game. A game so old even if I found the disk I would not be able to load the thing. Thankfully you can download it. Anyway, these guys are two of the five Djinn you can fight in the game. Part of the respective army of critters running around Shandalar while you try to stop the five wizards. All Djinn use three color decks which make them slow but nasty once they get going. Aga Galneer is the Black Djinn who uses green and white as well as black to create a deck focused on spells that cost life and ways to power them without killing himself. Major thing I did was given him claws to go with those massive horns and acessories that show his mana disposition a bit better. He's charging a drain life. Below him is the Alt-A-Kesh or Blue Djinn. This guy's primary mana is blue but he's got green and black as well. He focuses on hiding behind walls and then unleashing a massive swarm of flying creatures to peck you apart. Thus, that is exactly what I depict him doing lol. I gave him a tidal symbol on his belt there.
*Shandalar Monsters 2*
End of day night 1 brought about the Ape Lord. This guy is a bruiser that uses red and green mana with a powerful assortment of creatures and direct damage. In the low life realm of Shandalar this guy is a freaking monster. His key design characteristic is being a big ass brown gorilla with a green tunic. Naturally I make the tunic torn up as hell and make the ape himself look like Congar's batshit angry drunk stepfather. He's beating his chest and makings things as'plode as per usual. Start of night 2 was fairly light and started with one my personal favorite creatures in Shandalar, the Forest Dragon. Note that in the game, the actual dragons are winged behemoths that all have three mana decks. This guy is among the group of 'serpent' monsters that only use one color. The in game design has a arms and a yellow banded belly for the sprite with webbed ears, green skin, and a diamond pattern down his back in the avatar pic. I added horns to this depiction to give him more credence to the 'Forest Dragon' name *he's really a wurm* and made his diamon band pattern almost like tiger stripes so he blend into the forest even more. He's deck is basically about hiding behind big regenerating walls until he's got enough big creatures to crush you. Thus he's fairly slow and something of a push over for your standard 'rush him to death' deck. He's got some nasty potential combinations but only if he's allowed to live long enough to use them lol. Still one of my favorite creatures.
*Shandalar Monsters 3*
The last pic of the bunch, this is one of the higher tier white mana creatures you face in Shandalar, the Arch Angel. She's all about game reset effects like the famous 'Wrath of God' and a crusade of flying creatures. Her design is fairly simple: a lovely brunette with a shoulderless battle dress, big feathery wings, and large great sword she will chase you across the map with

I like the new Guardian kaiju, especially Raifu. He's pretty simple in design, but hey, that works. And, how much of a pain is it to draw Oakenrack? I mean, seriously, Ren, he must be a nightmare when drawing that thing?

Kesh looks like Doctor Manhatten, LOL.
A Nice scrap dump. And it is good to see a ton of new KCELL Kaiju, Duskizen looks unique for his archetype and Raifu...just Raifu.
Also, Piper looks like a demon child with her pigtails like horns (or wings like with Morrigan or Lilith), and her ears seemingling being pointed...

Piper having slightly pointed ears and horn like pigtails is intentional, as the trickster like emissary of the single biggest troll in KCELL lol.

Damn, these all look pretty fantastic, Ren. Sorry that they came about during what had to be a sucktastic time, but they came out so well.
Love the look of Oakenrack here. He looks like a pissed off forest. Raifu also looks pretty intriguing to me, probably unsurprisingly.

There's that elk monster you have been toying with for a while. I have to say he fits in rather well with the nature group and there's a lightning tiger, will wonders never cease.
Oddly the thing I'm most excited about on this is the group photo of the Kcell bunch and it is just as awesome as I imagined it would be! Yoma is more or less ignoring the rest, Piper is hyper and happy, Rema knows she is better then the others and Tony is kinda like WTH am I doing here?! All and all they couldn't be funnier. I almost wish they had a sitcom. But what would you call it?
Other then the Guardians and the Kcell the one that really catches my eye is the Ape Lord. I like him. I have no idea why, but I like him, he's just crazy looking as hell.

lol, I'd like to the think the group is jointly reacting to Piper's enthusiasim at being drawn again.
Ape Lord is 'everything is better with monkeys' personified. You see him rolling up to you, you start running toward the nearest town because he's got a delivery of fresh pain for you.

Two sketchdumps from two friends and both are wicked, wicked, WICKED..
Thought, Shinji looks a bit like Harry Potter.
Oakenrak is scary. There's this very subtle creepy feeling that feels so ominous. Kinda reminds me of a Colossus from SoTC. More organic looking, thought.
about Duskizen(Who is also terrifying in this picture) about his diet that I mentioned with Tyrantis once, is that a lot of spiders surprisingly eat nectar, pollen and carrion... which surprised me quite a bit. Maybe some food for thought, there?

RenDragonClaw In reply to AkityMH [2012-01-23 03:31:32 +0000 UTC]
Duskizen probably does it lots of things...though I imagine he'd have more access to carrion then the two former options.
lol, any short haired brunette with pale skin and glasses is going to at least somewhat resemble Harry Potter. Though he's actually based on a common Manga archtype character ie 'scary shiny glasses guy'.

That's true. Mainly cause there are not giant flora for him to eat on in the KCELL universe(As far as I know anyway.)
Know the funny part of that is that THIS scary, shiny glasses guy can kick your ass and kill you with ease, courtesy of one Death-Coil Apocalypse Bringer.

Damn! The Nature Guardians are looking more and more formidable with each new sketch. Raifu is a welcome addition to the group, as well as a neat riff on the big cat kaiju archetype that's beginning to grow in the fandom. The inverted color scheme, tendril whiskers, and fiery mane give him a nice added dose of personality. Oakenrack and Dawnaria look just fine, by the way - I don't think they really need anything more to make them stick out... though for some reason I can't pin down I want to see Dawnaria sporting a pair of huge, flaming eyebrows.
I think Duskizen could benefit from slightly thicker legs - as they are they look a little thin and brittle for such a massive arachnid - but I believe you noted that yourself, so... yeah. Otherwise he looks pretty fantastic. The head is a wonderful mix of ant and spider.
Gayan is looking pretty badass, which is perfect for everyone's favorite eagle of doom.
Our KCell cast is also looking pretty fantastic (off-model qualms aside). Piper's personality is the most apparent of the bunch, but that's probably because her personality is the most extroverted. Best teenager ever!
And the Shandalar monsters are just excellent, which is a given for your fantasy work.

They're quite a formidable bunch that's for sure. Those flaming eyebrows are likely just what I need to give Dawnaria that extra bit of expression and personality.
I've been struggling to find the balance in leg width there with Duskizen. I know right away that his joint and inner legs were way too spindly but I'm wondering if the bio pic's legs, while thicker and more multijointed and anchored to the body better, are still too thin. Even being of a slightly etherial nature, Duskien still has a tangible physical form and that weight has to go somewhere. We'll see when I post it but hopefully any further suggestions will fix him by the time I get around to doing a stats pic.
I probably need to show the KCELL group in different clothes too, so it's not like they got a single set of clothes all the time lol. Piper in a hoodie sounds awfully cute.
There is a whole darn book of the things, lots of odd ball critters in there trying to beat you into submission with a card game.

There are no end of furry jokes one could make about Rainsha, but honestly, it looks good on her. She's a martial artist squirrel - like a girlier King Seesar.
Oakenrack looks great. Not since the Jersey Devil have I seen a deer look that menacing. Except maybe for Hircine, but that had more to do with his voice than anything.
Hydrune is amazing. A sleeker, weaponized walrus. People don't realize how deadly walruses can be, but the forward-pointed tusks give it a spear-like quality.
I wouldn't say the Dawnaria needs much embellishing. It's a fairly standard gryphon, yes, but it's also a very solid design as is.
Duskizen looks great. He's clearly a spider, and doesn't get completely radical with the embellishing, but has a distinct look. The whiplike spinnerets are something I played around with for Jitsugo, but ultimately scrapped. They look good though - both for aiming webbing, and for giving it a very long-reach feel. One thing spiders are notable for that few works ever take advantage of is the enormous reach they have. He has a sort of 80's fantasy novel cover feel. Dark and menacing, but not melodramatic. More animalistic, but stylish than anything. His fur and tone give him a vaguely lupine quality that I rather like.
Raifu is another simple but elegant design. 'Less is more' is a mantra I've adopted, and it's designs like this that convince me of that. The whiskers, hair style and facial features really bring out his character without having to resort to wings, spines, tentacles or the like. He looks like a living thing, but still invokes oriental art.
Gayan has something of a 'squarejawed general' look this time around. I dig his enormous, menacing feet. Raptors sometimes have feet that are the equivalent of Orga's hands. If nothing else, it'll hopefully drive away the 'every bird is a chicken' notion people have.
The KCELL main cast just look wonderful. They break the mould in a lot of ways, but they still have a Five Man Band dynamic going for them. They're a VERY diverse lot, but seeing them together like this REALLY gets me excited for the story.
Piper is more huggable than ever.
I'm not really familiar with Magic, but I like what I see. Djinn's aren't something you see too often as adversaries. They tend to be relegated to the 'three wishes' archetype, which is a shame given the vast array of weirdness mythology gives us.
Plus technicolor humanoids never stop being cool.
When I see the ape lord, all I can think is 'he's wearing a corset'. He looks like a peasant who is also a were-ape.
Come to think of it, why don't we have were-apes in anything?
I like to think the elegant, winged humanoid angels we're familiar with are just 'a form you are comfortable with' so the eight-winged, flaming, million-eyed, four-faced eldritch abomination won't burn your eyes out when talking to you.

Some very concrete and thought provoking commentary as always Gregole. Rainsha is a light parody so I'm willing for her to be slightly anthromorphic in order to do what she does. The fact she does all this with fluffiness and rainbows just adds to it .
With Oakenrack I'm just largely trying to find that ideal 'neutral' state his horns are in most of the time and how much of his 'living landscape' type appearance I have going in certain places.
lol, while Hydrune is a whale, I am very amused and excited that you believe him to be a walrus. That's like two designs for the price of one. In a lot of ways he's like a leviathan mix of the two.
TT's commentary about big flaming eyebrows has given me an idea for more expression but otherwise, it's big classic medevial griffen that's on fire...you don't get much more dynamic then that I suppose.
80's fantasy...that has me recalling the Fire & Ice animation I saw awhile ago. Ironically Duskizen would fit right into that lol. Appreciate the feedback from our favorite arachnid expert. So they really can fling webbing like that? Hrm...might be a bit different than what I did with them in the bio pic since I moved them up some so it would be easier to hold them above the ground. It still answers my question about giving him a few long range tactics.
Yep, Raifu is about asthetically pure as you can get design wise. Enough to give him character but not so much that it obscures that he is essentially a monsterous tiger...that walks on clouds.
lol Chicken is the last thing I want to cross people's mind when they see Gayan. Though he does have the three primary colors of chickendom.
Piper is probably the best of the bunch AGAIN for reasons even I'm not sure of. She's probably the best put together anatomy wise out of them all this time around and she's as exuberent as always .
lol, Djinns are pretty crazy in Shandalar. They make this warbling gyro-copter noise as they chase you and if your're in their native terrian they can often teleport over to you right that second. Then you either have to duel them, answer a riddle or give them money .
Were-Ape would explain A LOT where the Ape Lord is concerned. Why would he wear that silly ass tunic anyway unless he had to become a muggle every so often.
I get the feeling I'm dealing with something 'beyond my comprehension' everytime she reset the whole board with that wrath of god of her's. The living eldritch symbol that is an angel's true form would likely make even planeswalkers shit themselves.
