The song goes "Listen with your heart. You will understand."
This explains how Pocahontas understood John Smith. However, this does not explain how she understood any other (English?) people, or how anyone else in her tribe understood any of the white men at all. This also does not explain how any of the white men understood any of the indians.
(John probably listened with his heart, or at least to Pocahontas, but doubtfully from the very beginning)
