Description
Hey guys! This is something I drew for an art project in my experimental art class. Our teacher assigned us with an open theme, however you had to choose something personal and that meant more to you than anything. So, allow me to explain this doozy: (History lesson whoop whoop)So if any of you are unfamiliar with the cold war, I'll be glad to inform you. I live in the capital of Canada, which means our government is chillin right by my window. Back in the days of the cold war, nuclear bomb threats were going left and right. That stuff was real scary. To protect all the important people of Canada, they built a fancy bunker.
The Diefenbunker, today is a museum. I've been there and it's super freaking cool. One of the most memorable things I experienced was the blast tunnel. This super long hallway made me feel like I was in a real life post-apocalyptic teen novel. It was pretty intense, and spooky. However, I did feel safe. Because I was guided by my big sister! Her name is Stephanie, she works at the Diefenbunker as an official tour guide and Cold War enthusiast. And she's a real BAMF. Over the passed years, Steph went through a pretty tough time. Even when things got really crappy for her, she still managed to keep a positive energy. And today she's in a really good place; graduated uni and college (she studied for 7 years!! crazy girl); living downtown with her best friend; has a very cool boyfriend; rock climbing; healthy and in shape; super cool job; etc etc.
So the bunker's blast tunnel is supposed to represent threats or society's negativity of many kinds, whether it be war, discrimination, inequality, stress, etc. anything bad about the world. The kids running through are my sisters, (foreground Stephanie, background other sister Val) with our doggy Dax. I included Dax because he's a super great energetic dog and since we had him, I felt like I could be a goof with him forever. I drew my sisters as kids, because I really wanted to put emphasis on being an energetic kid (today Steph is 28, Val is 23). I shall further explain:
My sister Val also has it hard every once in a while (boyfriend is often out of town, jobs are hard to find nowadays, etc). And Dax came from an animal shelter. Even what the bunker stands for was a difficult time for my country. I guess you could say that the "characters" all have their own sad backstory, and that's not stopping them from having a blast (lol pun, cause you know, they're in the BLAST tunnel? hahahahhaahhahahh)
So to me, the three of them symbolise childhood and how no matter how awful everything is sometimes, it’s important to never lose your childish and energetic spirit. Now that isn’t supposed to mean that you should forget about everything and pretend it isn't happening, but that every once in a while, you jus gatta let loose and have fun, like a kid.
Some of you might have already guessed, but yeah. Avatar was an inspiration for this too :3
I think that covers everything. Well, hope you like it! This one's definitely something I can say I am proud of.
Oh yeah, and my sister Val is also an artist! She does photography! Look at her stuff, yo! valeriemilesphotography.com/
