So I was clicking around on youtube the other day and came across someone attempting to play a shitty Inspector Gadget SNES game and it clicked in my head that the cartoon never really got a reboot. Iβm excluding the movie because it deserves to be excluded.
Cue me being a dumb idiot and then drawing a bunch of concept art-ish headcanon-y garbage.
Itβs kind of sad though because Penny could actually be pretty cool, you have a smart girl that could easily be updated into a hacker/robotics genius that solves crime because she ALREADY DID EVERYTHING BEFORE and why the hell not?
Also I made Brain into a dog. Just a dog. You know. Fluffy, cute, licks own butt. Dog.

I love how you draw Penny, but Gadget looks a bit too young, in my opinion. He looks like her elder brother, at the oldest, instead of her uncle.

Actually, there was a Inspector Gadget reboot, which was called Gadget and the Gadgetienes and it was an insufferable pile of shit. There's also apparently a 2015 one which looks okay-ish....

I never did see this Gadgetienes one.. if it is that bad then I dodged a bullet!
And yeah like a week after I did this picture I saw the reboot came out on Netflix and I watched a couple of episodes. It was not bad from what I saw.

Oh trust me, you'll be doing yourself a favor. Since basically the cartoon has the Gadgetienes which are these two annoying robots (like imagine Scrappy Doo, but ten times more annoying), and you have this French general stereotype. AN Gadget is such a dumb twat, that they pretty much made a joke in the starting episode where aliens applied a device to him, which would make him an idiot if he was a genius but instead made him really smart.
Honestly, what kinda bugs me about the 2015 reboot is that they kinda made Dr.Claw more of a joke than a villain, and for some reason they made Gadget a massive egotist and glory hog. Maybe it's just me, but he never came off like that in the original show, he was oblivious (and in a few episodes he did show he's smart, just always following the wrong leads), but he never seemed like a glory hog or egotist infact most of the times he seemed like he just accepted the credit because he had no other choice. Plus, with Penny becoming an agent, you'd think she and gadget would be working as this great team, she'd be the tech expert while gadget and Brain would be the muscles.

Oh fuck, haha. I'll stay far away. Sounds pretty forgettable.. no wonder I never heard of that one.
And yeah, it did come off as more about gags.. I only watched the first two episodes but I honestly felt like I was watching Austin Powers for kids. There's a lot of potential for the show and.. eh. Yeah, I wouldn't like Gadget to be self-centered. He's always been a silly fella and that's how it should remain. I wasn't offended by the reboot but neither did I feel compelled to keep watching.

I wasn't offended either, I just felt like they kinda missed the mark. I'm glad it's not as horrible as the Gadgetinies was, but like they could have went into a good and smart kids show, but then instead decided to play it safe and just be all goofy

Yeah, it's a real shame. There are tons of smart and well-written cartoons out there now that can be enjoyed by, well, anyone! Kids aren't stupid. Updating something like Gadget to that should have been easy but, welp, there you go.

He also looks too young here - in the original series, he definitely looks like a middleaged man.
I always found Penny very annoying in the original show. Your Penny looks much better, because I dunno... she seems much more likeable for some reason. The original Penny was a kid however, while this Penny is a teenager... but I don't think it matters too much. I found it odd however that in your drawings it looks like she's got a romantic chemistry with Gadget. He's his uncle! They shouldn't give off a romantic vibe, she's pretty much like his daughter.
Your Brain is superadorable. But in the original show, I assumed he wasn't a normal dog, but a enhanced dog with superior intelligence. I still didn't like that they made him so un-dog, your version looks like a dog at last.

Yeah, took a lot of liberties with him. I imagine the actual cartoon one would look pretty weird with the hat off- probably some kind of hatch or something for helicopter blades? I probably shouldn't try to apply logic to a cartoon like that one!Β
And, oh god, no- not into shipping people with their uncles. If he was just a robot that's one thing- but I heard somewhere he was legit her uncle and was rebuilt the way he is. (Still not counting the live action movie) But I heard that one some podcast and they didn't have a source. So yeah no. Was going for maybe a melancholy to her- like the only family she has is this robot replica and they take care of each other.. non-romantically.Β
And thanks about Brain. He could be an altered dog for sure! I'd think more like Ein from Cowboy Bebop or something, hyper intelligent and helpful but still a dog. You're right, the one in the show is so alien-looking. I know every cartoon then had talking dogs but I just don't care for the trope.
No problem! I'm glad you found it to be interesting, sometimes I just get the urge to tinker with ideas like this. I found out just a bit after I did this piece that there's a new series on netflix, done in CG, and Penny is a teenager! I watched a couple of episodes and it's silly but not bad stuff. I need to watch more of it though, lol.Β

A lot of CG art is kind of off-putting to me, like it took me forever to give the new TMNT a chance because of the art style. Everything else about it is great though. I'm just into hand-drawn stuff, but I know it's just way more work/money to produce..

I'm into handdrawn cartoons, too. CG is economical, yeah... but, unless you've got Pixar-level budget and skills, it just looks uncanny and cheap.
And besides, a lot of the beauty of the original inspector Gadget series was in the animation, which was so chock full of body language and details!

well here is what happens when Gadget and Penny and Penny as a Child not the Teenager move into a new house which harvers a unusual secret it goes to another dimension called Blanket World hone to these entities from another dimension called the Blanket People Blankets arms legs and hands and feet they spy on Penny and Gadget but mainly on Penny because they are obbsesed with her they want to get there hands on the kid like when Gadget is on a mission Brain following him Penny is at home in her pajamas which are blue with snowmen on them because its a school night so she talking to Brain on a Web Cam but then several blanket people come out of Penny bedroom closet which is where the portal to there dimension is and one of them puts his giant soft cossy hand on Penny shoulder she looks up to see the Blanket People and says Huh What the then the Blanket person who put his hand on Penny shoulder grabs her and scoops her into his giant soft cossy arms and tells Penny she coming live with them in there dimesnion forever Penny says No Put Me Down You Big App and Penny is carried away into her bedroom closet the Blanket person holding her walks in first with Penny toss over his broad shoulder she walks into the closet with Penny wrap up in his arms first then the others follow and the last one shut the door and they telaport Penny to there dimension where they want to keep her wrap up and snuggled in there arms forever.
