Yeah, brands are made by a fire heated piece of metal being applied to something's/someone's skin.
It was done to slaves and cattle so if they ran away, got loose or were stolen, they could be easily identified as belonging to someone and who that someone was.
Years and years ago I heard that it was a slight thing is some body modification shops to have yourself branded.
Since the guy's forehead thing wasn't done this way, they would be just tattoos. I only questioned it because in the little sit down we had with the brothers, the guy's forehead was smooth and unmarked. And getting rid of tattoos don't leave you with either.

As for the brad, I'm sorry if I'm being annoying, but I was going to use the word "brand" a lot in the future and now I'm not so sure it's correct.
This, let's say, mark is tattoed on a person's forehead against their will to indicate that the said person belongs to a certain group of... unwanted individuals. Is it wrong to use "brand" only because it was made by ink, not fire? I'm kinda reluctant to use "tattoo" because tattoos are more often seen as decorations, while brands are ugly and maybe even humiliating things nobody wants to have. Am I completely wrong here?

Ok, I looked up the word and you can technically use the word to describe the mark, but the most common understanding of being branded is to have a shape burned into someone/something. And yes, tattoos are for marks made with ink. If you are being creative with describing the mark you can say he was branded by who ever, but a tattoo is a tattoo and a brand is a brand.
People have been tattooed against their will, so it’s not impossible to think that it won’t happen again in the future.
