And that's it for the mane six. Had some really cool feedback about this direction over the last several days, and it's like I'm finally starting to find my niche as an artist. Or maybe that's all just in my head I dunno. Gonna Β see where this style takes me as I continue to develop it

Why do all the ponies in this collection seem so...depressed?

Well I did the first one while listening to The Rain Song by Led Zeppelin...which is not a depressing song per se but the instrumental parts have this listless world weary feeling and it seeped into the art. And then I just decided to keep the theme going and draw all the Mane 6 looking a little messed up in one way or another. I listened to the same song again at least once while drawing all of them.
In contrast, I'm nearly done with a picture of princess luna which is fuelled mainly by electro swing, so...yeah.

Judging by the other pieces in this series, I assume she is supposed to be sad or forlorn. Β However, I can't help but think she's about to plant a hoof in somepony's face.

I took a look through your gallery and was struck by the massive skill jump from the beginning of the year to now.
How do you practice? Repetition? Do you use references now and again?

Wherever possible I prefer to draw from imagination but I still reference all sorts of stuff, yeah. In the past week I've put more thought into how I draw wings and I've been looking at a lot of photos of birds (actually gaining an appreciation for birds along the way). I've gotten better this year, but I've also been steadily gaining ground since I started. I've put out a lot more in the past week or so because I simplified my approach a whole lot, and these quicker drawings basically are my mode of practice at the moment. I'm pretty happy with how it's going so far.

If you don't mind, one more question and I'll stop bugging you, promise! Β How did you simplify your approach? Β I've been trying to draw more, but even my pencil sketches seem to take forever. Β I know I should start with simple shapes, but I find it hard to go from there.

I was doing stuff with upwards of 40 layers and sometimes double that. Knocked it down to about a dozen or less, emphasising linework rather than complex shading.
I wouldn't worry yourself too much about being slow at sketching, if you keep it up you'll get faster automatically.
