Description
Another SSS test. This is exactly the same light set up as the last image (one Infinite light) but this time I have used a self illuminated environment sphere to fill the scene with ambient light.I need to work on making the SSS renders a litte bit sharper but I am sure I'll figure that out soon.
This version of Poser is well worth the upgrade and I haven't even scratched the surface of the new features Woohoo!!

What do you mean by using 'a self illuminated environment sphere'?

An environment sphere is a large sphere object that surrounds the scene that you can apply a texture to. You can plug the texture into the "ambient colour" node and if you are using Indirect lighting in poser then the sphere will illuminate the scene in a similar way to an IBL light. The main benefit of this method over the IBL is that the texture applied to the sphere is visible in reflections which it is not with IBL.
If you are interested my product "ID-Light" comes with an Environment sphere as well as textures and light presets. www.renderosity.com/mod/bcs/idβ¦
Or alternatively BagginsBill has a FREE environment sphere that you can apply your own textures to sites.google.com/site/bagginsbβ¦
If you need any more help, let me know.

yes he is the Last Gladiator by Smay. You can get it at Daz3D
He has some awesome displacement maps that work very well when using SSS

You did an awesome job, friend! As for the details on the head, don't think it needs more work, but the body to match the face a little bit (both bumps/wrinkles and texture marks [whatever they call those]), I think would be a good pointer.

I noticed that too.. I think the light somehow masked the detail on his body as it is more evident in the other version with only one light.
Thanks for the comment

Wow! This is an incredible image. The new SSS node adds much needed realism to the Poser FF render engine, I'm very impressed.

If you are getting results like this now, I can only imagine that the results you can attain after learning all the nuances of how to get the best out of the new SSS. It would likely equal images created with high end render engines.
I did purchase the 2012 upgrade and downloaded it, this has encouraged me to actually use it!

LOL, the environment sphere is from IDL studio(or something) from RDNA. I just plugged an image into the ambient node, then an infinte light off to the side.
I made the skin shader using some tips from the forums at RDNA.. Bagginsbill has some great examples over there.. I just spent all day reading LOL
If you need any extra in depth info let me know an I can send you a note

It is pretty technical
This is the thread [link]
I just read most of that.. At some point BB posted an image of his node set up which is pretty easy to copy. I think BB uses Inches as his measurement so if your gonna copy his set up change yous to inches(if not done already)
I have tried his set up and have had varying results with different textures.. and I am still trying to find something that looks decent on v4

Definitely worth it.. The jump from Poser 8 to 9/2012 is way bigger than from 7 to 8. I am so happy I upgraded

I use Poser Pro 2010, and I'm wondering whether its worthwhile upgrading.....
π: 0 β©: 1
RetroDevil In reply to Blades-123 [2011-09-22 18:20:04 +0000 UTC]
I upgrading because of the SSS, light emitting objects and the ability to hide objects when rendering. Those three things were features I really wanted. I am very happy I did and I haven't even tried most of the new stuff.
