She went into the bedroom, towelling her hair, and found Sheng sitting on the bed as though her thoughts had summoned him. “I didn't hear you come in,” she said, keeping her tone calm despite her surprise.

“I,” he began then hesitated for a moment before continuing. “Have always been quiet.”

He was on her blind side, but she could feel his eyes on her as she reached for her patch. Pretending not to notice, she put it on and tossed her damp hair back out of her face, running her fingers through it. “Really? I don't know how you manage it with those hooves.”

He shuffled his feet, bowing his head so his silver bangs hung down over his face. “My hooves are softer than you would think,” he said, and then he frowned at her. “Why do you hide it?”

The question was completely unexpected, and Cream stood very still for a moment. He didn’t need to clarify his meaning, after all it was the first time he’d seen her without the patch. His reaction was better than she’d expected, though if he’d been his usual bratish self and called her ugly, she might have found it easier to respond. The hesitance in his tone had caught her off guard.

She took a slow breath to calm herself, and turned to face him properly. “Wouldn’t you?” she asked.
