Have you tried the Japanese version of Castlevania III? It's way better than the American one.

Is the game design in it less unfair? (For example, is there a proper, non-savestate-related checkpoint at the actual Dracula staircase rather than just the beginning of the gruelingly difficult level leading up to it?)
